We’re back with the latest Supermarket Wine Bargains, hunting down the latest and greatest discounts on must try wines lining supermarket shelves. These beautiful reds, whites and rosés are all currently on offer at Sainsbury’s, and at under £10, they’re better than so many wines twice the price! La Masseria Del Borgo Primitivo Manduria

This Puglia red is stocked full of dark berries – think blackcurrants and black cherries, richly delivered right through to a very long finish. It really is rich, not a million miles away from some Tawny Ports, but it’s so satisfying and delicious.

We love shouting about this Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc because it completely deserves it. The pretty label pops on the shelf, and the liquid inside pops even more. It’s bright and bold, with tropical passionfruit, mango and kiwi at the fore, bitter grapefruit tang, and a lovely minerality. Just incredible for under a tenna.

A bit different, this is a Rosé interpretation of the Sauvignon Blanc grape. As you might expect, it retains the fresh crispness of white wine and great citric bite. But then comes silky, lush floral strawberry and ripe peach. Admittedly, they’re subtler than they are in most Rosé, but the zesty balance struck up is magical, and it feels like it should be way pricier (but don’t tell Sainsbury’s!)

Sainsbury's Taste the Difference Île-de-Beauté Rosé

Four grapes (Niellucciu, Sciaccarellu, Grenache, Vermentinu and Syrah) layer up this Corsica Rosé, that comes out towards the dryer end of the pink spectrum. The delicate bouquet on the nose blossoms into ripe currants and berries, with a touch of soft peach, and all before some warm pink pepper on the finish. If you’re a red or white drinker usually, then this may well win you over.

Feuerheerd's Anchor Wine Reserva Douro DOC

This deep Portuguese red makes great use of the Douro region surrounding it by finishing in Vintage Port barrels for 12 months. The result is refined spice and elegant black fruits, as well as a lingering, velvety finish. For £10, there are few reds better at remaining nuanced but also bold and imposing.

Diablo Dark Red

Despite the devilish bottle, this is heaven in a bottle. It’s one of those wines that is memorable from the off, plush with ocean deep fruity flavours – think damson, cherry, and blackberry. Carnivor is everything you want from Zinfandel, and as you will have guessed, the perfect meaty accompaniment. Lodi, California has built a reputation for hard hitting, well-structured Zinfandel styles, and this delivers on that. Sumptuously rich cherry and blackberry jam floods the mouth for an indulgent red that will stun on the dinner table.

Journey's End Spekboom Syrah

Not only do they make cracking wine, but Journey’s End have also been busy planting Spekboom, or Elephant Bush because of its incredible CO2 absorption rate. But, back to the bottle, which is punching well above the price point. Velvety tannins and spiced dark fruits stand out from this Syrah, but there’s also a savoury side to discover, with black olives and smoky oak. Mightily impressive.

What Should I Drink With Haggis?

Everyone knows haggis is synonymous with the Scots, but fewer could actually pinpoint what is and why it it’s a cultural icon. Well, one of the reasons is poet Robert Burns. He penned the poem Address To A Haggis, and five years after his death in 1801, his friends gathered and served haggis in his memory. Since then, it’s become quite the annual event.

Haggis itself is a crumbly sausage pudding with rich, dense, warming peppery flavour. Recipes vary, but generally sheep’s pluck (heart, lungs, and liver – nothing goes to waste), oatmeal, onion, suet, spiced and salt combine. Traditionally, the casing was made from animal stomach but that’s rarer these days. On the side, you’ll often find buttery mash, swede, turnips, and gravy, so that all needs to be considered for the pairing.

Any self-respecting Scot will pretty much always choose to pair whisky with haggis, as we’ll go into below. However, there are a few alternative routes to go down!

Whisky

Like haggis, Burns put his love for whisky to ink with the poem Scotch Drink. As a celebration of a famous Scot and an iconic Scottish dish, Scotch has to come along for the ride too. It’s not just traditional though, because it actually marries haggis fantastically well.

You can either pick a Scotch that contrasts the dish, or one that overlaps. We have a whole ‘Best Whisky for Burns Night’ guide here, but generally look for something a little sweet and spicy, with pepper, malt, and a little smoke – this will bring out the best in haggis. As long as you don’t go for anything too extreme in any direction, the Scotch should hold up against the dish and compliment it.

Shiraz

Red tends to match the spice and richness of haggis, and big jammy reds like Australian Shiraz work a treat. Try and find a bottle without high tannins so it doesn’t compete too much, enough acidity to cut through all that richness, and fruity sweetness to contrast with the peppery spice.

Rhône Syrah

Fruity, spice-laden Rhône Syrah, perhaps with a little Grenache, also goes well with haggis. We’re after bright juicy fruits, pepper, soft tannins, and a good crunch of acidity, which should all cut through, contrast, and compliment your feast in the right areas. The Grenache will bring some ripe sweetness to offset the savoury, richness, so something like this bottle is top notch.

Viognier

To provide something for everyone, a full and firm Viognier can fit the bill. Reds work better with the hearty, gamey flavour of haggis, but a full, firm Viognier will not disappoint. Ripe fruit lightens the peppery herbs in the dish, the viscosity suits the heft, but it doesn’t have the robust weight to crush the flavours either. It knows its place, essentially, offering a little support and a little something different.

Creag Dhu Whisky

The backdrop of this beautiful bottle lets you know what Creag Dhu are all about. If you like smoky scotch, then you should be aware that the peat burning required isn’t all that great for the environment – with carbon release and biodiverse peatlands cut into. However, Creag Dhu put money into saving these precious peatlands, and this bottle isn’t peated itself. It’s a Speyside dram, aged for 8 years and all that time in sherry casks delivers luscious, dried fruits, honey notes and nutty malt. The charred spice finish is dreamy.

The Best Scotch Whisky Under £50

GlenAllachie 8 Year Old Whisky

This whisky brings all the sherried ageing you expect from GlenAllachie, but as well as two different sherry casks, it’s rested in virgin oak and red wine barriques. The result? Rich, syrupy, fruits, but balanced. Expect warming spice, floral honey, nutty malt, heaps of dried fruits, and a surprising minty finish. Every sip is so interesting, and it’s a great whisky to share around and explore together.

This is a young whisky for Fettercairn, but still carries those tropical, floral notes the distillery is loved for. It’s lovely and accessible, but the masterful balance will impress seasoned dram drainers all the same.

The Top 10 Winter Vodka Cocktails

Brown spirits tend to dominate winter cocktails, but as a neutral spirit, vodka is so adaptable and integrates into the winter flavours wonderfully. It’s punchy and serves as great mixology foundations to build delicious flavours on.

Homemade syrups show up in a few of the recipes below, so for a guide on how to make your own click here! It’s way easier than you might expect and can do amazing things for your cocktails.

Espresso Martini

All the polls show that this is the most popular winter cocktail in the UK, so we just had to include it. The seductive white foam of the meniscus, the rich flavour, the lusciously smooth mouthfeel – you’ve got no chance hibernating after a few of these.  

Ingredients
40ml Vodka
25ml Kahlúa coffee liqueur
25ml cooled espresso
½ tbsp simple syrup
Three coffee beans (garnish)

Method
Shake everything with ice and strain into a pre-chilled martini glass, before garnishing with a beautiful trio of coffee beans for that distinct look.

Hot ‘n’ Minty White Russian

Taking inspiration from the Espresso Martini, this is a sweeter version to warm your cockles. Velvety, deliciously sweet white-hot chocolate is cooled by peppermint syrup, all built on a foundation of robust vodka and rich espresso. It’s viscous, lively, and surprisingly light with the peppermint. A uniquely indulgent concoction indeed.

Ingredients
30ml vodka
25ml espresso shot
80ml white hot chocolate
15ml peppermint syrup
Whipped cream (optional garnish)

Method
As long as your espresso and white-hot chocolate are hot, there’s no need to heat everything else up because some room temp vodka and peppermint syrup will bring the temperature together nicely. It’s just a case of combining everything gently and finishing with some whipped cream for that extra special touch.

Dirty Martini

This is another winter favourite. Getting down and dirty with your Martini brings a fantastic savoury flavour, with a salty, olive-y profile. It’s about as far from the sweet, tropical cocktails of summer as it’s possible to get, but just as satisfying with it’s crisp, saltiness.

Ingredients
70ml vodka
25ml dry Vermouth
15ml pickle juice

Pickles (garnish)

Method
Stir all your ingredients in a mixing glass with ice, and strain into a chilled Martini glass before finishing off with the signature pickle garnish. It might feel strange if this is your first, but chances are it won’t be your last. 

Elderflower Cosmopolitan

We were going to include the standard Cosmo, because that is a stalwart of winter cocktails, but this elderflower version feels a touch more wintery and aromatic. Cocktails are about experimentation after all! The delicious elderflower liqueur brings a mellower, more fragrant, and floral flavour than the usual cranberry. Ingredients
45ml vodka
20ml elderflower liqueur
20ml pineapple juice
Dash of lemon
Dash of rose water (optional)
Basil (garnish)

Method
All about the shaking here – get those arms pumping until your shaker feels cold to the touch, and strain over large ice cubes. Voila!

White Russian

How could we not? Made iconic in The Big Lebowski, it’s a dreamy combination of vodka, coffee liqueur and cream, resulting in sweet, velvety and undeniably delicious flavours. It’s heavy, indulgent, and loved by everyone, and perfect for wintertime.

Ingredients
60ml vodka
30ml coffee liqueur (Kahlúa)
15ml heavy cream

Method
Mix everything together before pouring over ice in a small tumbler glass. You could sprinkle chocolate powder or add coffee beans, but keeping it bare like a snowcapped rooftop works great too.

Moscow Mule

The refreshment of a Moscow Mule makes it a summer classic, but the dominant ginger notes absolutely resonate with winter too. It’s one of the original cocktails that made use of vodka when it wasn’t mainstream, which is strange considering it’s now the most popular cocktail spirit. It’s punchy, spicy, and gorgeously light with that fizz.

Ingredients
50ml vodka
80ml ginger beer
Juice of half a lime
Lime wedge (garnish)

Method
You don’t have to have the copper mug, but it really completes the Mule, and keeps it super cool. Just pour vodka and lime juice into the mug over ice, top up with ginger beer and finish with a lime wedge.

Cranberry and Pomegranate Punch

This is one for those winter gatherings saving you the hassle of individual cocktails. It straddles tartness and sweetness perfectly, tasting super refreshing with fruity fizz. As with any punch, you can sort of throw anything in, but we think the balance below is harmonious.

Ingredients (jug)
300ml cranberry juice
350ml pomegranate juice
350ml sparkling wine
100ml vodka
70ml cranberry syrup
2tbsp grenadine
10 mint leaves
4 lime wedges
fresh cranberries and lime (garnish)

Method
Muddle the mint first and fill the bottom of the jug with ice. After that, slowly stir everything except the sparkling wine which you should add last to keep the bubbles going. Scattered in cranberries and lime for brightness, and you’re away.

Pear and Elderflower Collins

A classic Tom Collins is an all-round cocktail, but this fruity makeover really takes it to the next level. Pear puree brings the freshness and pear liqueur brings the sweetness. It’s the lightest, fruitiest cocktail out there and vodka is perfect just to add some steel.

Ingredients (jug)
50ml vodka
15ml elderflower liqueur
2 tsp pear liqueur
25ml pear puree
20ml lemon juice
15m honey
Sparkling water to top up
Pear slice and cinnamon (garnish)

Method
Shake everything but the soda in a shaker with ice until it feels cold, and strain into a Collins glass over fresh ice. Once you’ve added the sparkling water, be gentle with the stirring to combine. Add a thin slice of pear and a dust of cinnamon for the finishing touches.

Rosemary Fizz

Rosemary is one of the key wintery scents, but it’s difficult to integrate into a cocktail. Here, it just adds an aromatic, herbal undertone to a mellow but vibrant mix of lemon juice, sparkling water and vodka. It is unbelievably refreshing, and so simple to pull together

Ingredients (jug)
50ml vodka
20ml lemon juice
20ml rosemary syrup
Top up with sparkling water
Rosemary and lemon twist (garnish)

Method
Fill a highball glass with ice, strain vodka, rosemary syrup and freshly squeezed lemon juice over and top up with those bubbles. Rosemary sprig and lemon twist are a must.
