No one loves the long winter nights that bring darkness by the afternoon, but in the build up to Christmas, this darkness is filled with the glimmering twinkle of Christmas markets. Come November, Britain’s towns and cities burst into full festive mode with chalets selling their wares, pop-up bars bustling with life and all manner of entertainment from giant wheels to magical ice rinks. There’s something special going on almost everywhere, but these are the Christmas markets that take things to that next level.

Hyde Park, Winter Wonderland, London

We can’t not include Hyde Park’s Winter Wonderland, promising, yet again, a festive dreamland that keeps visitors of all ages entertained. Home to the UK’s largest open-air ice-skating rink, carnival rides galore, and a sprawling Christmas market, this attraction is a London winter must-see on a scale not seen anywhere else. Not only are there the Bavarian stalls for handcrafted gifts and tasty treats like churros, bratwursts, and warming mugs of mulled wine, but other gates grant access to much more; the 70m observation wheel, a grotto, live music, ice bars, sculptures and fire pits to name a few. In terms of tickets, entrance costs between £5 and £7.50 (it’s London guys!), but there are a few different options and discounts depending on when you go and whether you pre-book rides – take a look on the site below. It’s also worth mentioning that it’s a stone’s throw from the incredible window displays of Regent and Oxford Street.

If you want a huge Christmas market to explore, look no further. Birmingham’s festival is the biggest outside of Germany and Austria, bringing Bavarian charm and festive cheer to Victoria Square and New Street. Known for traditional bratwurst, gluhwein, and stollen, it is teeming with handcrafted gifts, charming chalets, and carol singing. Expect big wheels, ice rinks and a singing Christmas moose called ‘Chris Moose’ too.

Of course, this festival hotspot has a cracking Christmas Market. In recent years, it’s expanded across Princes Street Gardens to The Mound and up the Royal Mile, all set against possibly the best-looking backdrop in the UK. Expect stalls full of artisan crafts, gourmet foods, and Christmas magic including Santa’s stories, the big wheel, illuminated paths, and a 450 strong Christmas Tree maze. And all for free!

Winter Wonderland, Nottingham

Beyoncé Launches ‘SirDavis’ Whiskey

Beyoncé has swapped stage for distillery with the launch of her whiskey, SirDavis. Partnering with the very capable hands of Moët Hennessy, this venture is more than just a business move; it’s a personal tribute to her great-grandfather, a known ‘moonshiner’ back in the day.

“I’ve always been drawn to the power and confidence I feel when drinking quality whisky and wanted to invite more people to experience that feeling,” says Beyoncé.

“When I discovered that my great-grandfather had been a moonshine man, it felt like my love for whisky was fated. SirDavis is a way for me to pay homage to him, uniting us through a new shared legacy.”

Some celebrity liquor brands are very much hands-off affairs; but Queen Bey its involved in carefully crafting the product. Beyoncé and her team worked closely with Moët Hennessy’s expertise to create a whiskey that’s both sophisticated and approachable, appealing to both whiskey connoisseurs and casual drinkers alike. She didn’t just slap her name on the bottle; she chose the single malts and grain whiskies, and she designed a bottle as glamorous and stylish as herself, in keeping with her personal aesthetic.

But don’t be fooled by the star power; SirDavis is a serious whiskey that stands up on its own. Master Distiller Dr. Bill Lumsden who has previously worked with Glenmorangie and Ardbeg led the technical side of things, masterminding a rare 51% rye 49% malted barley mash bill. The aim was to achieve the elegant mouthfeel and textures of Japanese and Scotch whiskies, without losing the robust and deep American rye. Sherry cask maturation was the final touch, bringing juicy, red fruits and warm spices. Tradition and innovation, with some glitz’n’ glam thrown in.

The Launch of DRINK IT IN Festival in London

If you’re looking for a unique festival experience to round off the (so-called) summer, look no further than DRINK IT IN, which opens to the public on 7th September in Southeast London for the very first time! Here’s why it sounds like an absolute feast for the senses.

When it comes to food and drink, festivals are often dominated by bigger brands, but DRINK IT IN is designed by tastemakers for tastemakers, celebrating exceptional and distinctive smaller producers. You'll have the chance to sample and support everything from beautifully crafted alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks to artisanal spirits and mood-enhancing cocktails. Where is all this taking place then? Well, what once was a multi-storey car park is now an artistic and cultural hub, hosting unforgettable experiences for Londoners and visitors since 2017 - Peckham Levels. It offers a dynamic blend of theatre, music, comedy, talks, and events, combined with the vibrant nightlife, food, and bar scenes of London. So, whilst there’s all this food and drink to get stuck into, there’s also local art everywhere, kids’ activities, music from DJs and live bands, cocktail-making competitions with Pritesh Mody from Sunday Brunch, sustainable fashion collections from All Saints founder Stuart Trevor and the opportunity to get professionally photographed as a model! Like we said, a feast for the senses.

Mount Gay Releases New Limited Edition Eclipse Navy Strength Rum

Rum’s Caribbean heritage goes way back to the 1600s so to be the world's oldest rum distillery takes some doing, and to still be at the top of their game is even more impressive. That honour goes to Mount Gay, who have just launched a new limited-edition rum: Mount Gay Eclipse Navy Strength. This release coincides with Cowes Week, a prestigious sailing event, highlighting Mount Gay's deep-rooted connection with the sailing community.

Established in 1703, Mount Gay has a rich history of crafting exceptional rums in Barbados. The new Eclipse Navy Strength, crafted by Master Blender Trudiann Branker, celebrates this heritage. Did you know that the term "Navy Strength" harks back to a time when sailors needed their rum to be potent enough to ignite wet gunpowder? This meant ensuring it was at least 57.1% ABV, the standard for Navy Strength.

"For this release, I took inspiration from Mount Gay’s long history with sailing," said Branker. "The history of navy strength spirits is fascinating and experimenting with the beloved Eclipse blend at navy strength revealed vibrant flavours. Whether with mixers or in cocktails, it is a delight."

First launched in 1910, Mount Gay Eclipse is renowned for its balanced and aromatic profile, featuring notes of vanilla, almond, ripe banana, and dark chocolate. This limited edition takes it a step further by incorporating older pot still rums aged between two to four years, enhancing its complexity. Bottled at the traditional Navy Strength of 57.1% ABV, Eclipse Navy Strength offers bold flavours of roasted pineapple, banana, mocha, and vanilla, all deliver with a big whack of boozy intensity.

It's a versatile expression that sounds like a lot of fun exploring over simply ice, but it’s perfect for classic and inventive cocktails alike. Mount Gay have suggested some tropical beauties that sound ideal for sunny sipping: 

Navy Paloma

Ingredients:
1oz (30ml) Eclipse Navy Strength
3-4oz (90-120ml) grapefruit soda
Garnish with grapefruit slice

Method:
Simply build in a highball glass and garnish with grapefruit slice.

Navy Punch

Ingredients:
1 oz (30 ml) Eclipse Navy Strength
0.5 oz (15 ml) fresh grapefruit juice
0.5 oz (15 ml) fresh lemon juice
0.5 oz (15 ml) orgeat (or vanilla simple syrup)
1oz (30ml) filtered water (omit water if making a single serve, simply shake and strain over ice)

Method:
A classic batch punch, simply mix everything together with ice in a jug!

Fresh Coco Mojito

Ingredients:
1 oz (30 ml) Eclipse Navy Strength
0.75 oz (22.5 ml) simple syrup (1:1)
1 oz (30 ml) fresh lime juice
2 oz (60 ml) young coconut water
10 mint leaves

Method:
Lightly press mint leaves in the bottom of the shaker tin, add rum, lime and simple syrup and lightly shake. Pour into Collins or highball glass, add coconut water and crushed ice to top. Garnish with mint!

How Absolut and Tomorrowland Are Tackling Loneliness

For many festival goers, it’s a time to forget about worries back home and experience something different, but when so many people are having fun around you, it can feel incredibly isolating if you’re not. After all, some issues can’t be left at the gate. But, with the right support and through embracing the universal power and connection of live music, a more connected and inclusive community can be built – this is the continued aim of Absolut and Tomorrowland’s partnership.

Taking place in Belgium each year, Tomorrowland is one of the world’s largest electronic dance music festivals, attracting 400,000 attendees with 16 stages and over 800 DJs. You’ll most likely know Absolut from their vodkas of course, but as part of the Pernod Ricard group they’re also responsible for brands like Beefeater, Malibu, Kahlua and more.  The two joined forces in 2017, and it was in 2022 when they started their United We Dance platform. Each year, the committee sit down and pick an issue that’s particularly relevant to the kind of people attending their festivals. This year, that issue is one that has increased massively in recent years – loneliness.

The World Health Organisation declared loneliness a ‘pressing health threat’, launching its own commission to try and tackle the problem. They’ve warned that people, no matter the age, who are lonely or feel isolated are 30% more likely to die early, which is staggering. Of course it’s not just life expectancy that’s affected, but quality of life too. Loneliness is a well-known problem amongst older people, but fewer people know just how much it is affecting younger generations too. Also, research shows that underrepresented groups are more vulnerable to loneliness. Social media, pandemic ramifications, cultural change and so on have all been cited as factors, and of course, a collaboration like this isn’t going to solve such a gigantic problem, but any effort to combat it is meaningful.

In this increasingly online and isolated world, music festivals are a rarity by the nature of festival goers’ open-mindedness to human connection and facilitating cross-cultural exchange, so it’s a great place to try and extinguish some of this loneliness. Onsite and online activities, resources and platforms have been organised, including The Community Booth for meeting people, live podcasts with artists discussing mental health and daily speed networking events. Also, the festival paper will feature columns by renowned DJ and committee member Sunnery James as well as performers, delving deeper into experiences with loneliness. The platform is also looking to use social media for good, by providing platforms to find connections for solo attendees. Tad Greenough, Global Chief Creative Officer at The Absolut Company, said, "We believe the dance floor should be a space where everyone feels welcome. By coming together, we can foster empathy and understanding to drive positive change."

Snoop Dogg & Dr Dre Bring Gin & Juice Cocktails to the UK

When you have a hit song called Gin & Juice, it’s surely only a matter of time before you join the pantheon of celebrity drinks. It’s been 30 years since Dr Dre and Snoop Dogg released the tune on their album Doggystyle, and after launching in the US, the ready-to-go cocktails inspired by it are making waves in the UK.

As you might expect, the launch party was quite the event. Hosted at Flipper's Roller Boogie Palace in London on July 18, 2024, all the founders and team were present alongside a host of stars such as Idris Elba, footballers Jude Bellingham and Virgil van Dijk and many more stars, including a surprise performance from Eminem.

Ready-to-drink cocktails are increasingly competitive, but with two of the biggest names in hip-hop behind it, as well as a legendary song and some delicious flavours, Gin & Juice looks set to be another hit for the iconic duo.
