Aprimondo Appassimento

This is one of the best Sangiovese reds under £10. It’s full of body and flavour, with a luxuriously smooth mouthfeel. You can expect a symphony of darker berries, with great sweetness from the dried grapes. Fig, date, prune and vanilla mellow things out for a fantastically well-rounded wine.

19 Crimes Red Wine

19 Crimes are a reliable go-to at this pricepoint, with each bottle being a ode to those transported to Australia many years ago. This Shiraz-dominant blend is aged in American oak so vanilla and cedar spice support jammy blackcurrant and plum. It’s got an almost Christmassy feel to it we think, with a good whack of sweetness so if like that, you’ll love this.

Apothic Merlot

Untamed blueberries and dark cherries absolutely soar in this silky smooth Cali Merlot. Buttery, oaky, vanilla fill out the palate indulgently making this the sweetest, jammiest of any Apothic wine. It won’t be for everyone, but for big rich sweetness, it’s delish.

Luis Felipe Edwards Malbec

Fans of Chilean Malbec, look no further. Grown from 70-year-old wines, the stand out characteristics here are the dryness and pleasing acidity joining the richness of blackberry, plum and chocolate coated cherries. There’s oak too, but it’s not as intrusive as Argentinian blends. It’s very nicely poised overall, with a more expensive feel than it actually is… which is always nice.

Maison Castel Rose D'anjou

This inviting pale pink hue hides an explosion of citrus and red fruits on the nose, which unfold into a richly aromatic palate. A refreshing dryness persists, but strawberry sweetness and light melon come through fabulously and last an age. Top notch Loire Valley Rosé.

Brancott Estate Sauvignon Blanc

This Marlborough Sauvignon is a favourite in a number of UK supermarkets, loved for its traditional expression of the style. The whole thing is razor sharp but elegant with it, and there’s even some herbaceous complexity to play with. So well-rounded.

El Jardin De Ana Godello

What amazing value this is for £8. The work of renowned producer Martín Códax, it delivers maximum freshness with no oak. 100% Godello, it’s juicy, and lively, brimming with orchard fruits and a touch of creamy butter. Nothing too complicated, you know what you’re getting, and it’s delicious.

Bouchard Grand Conseiller Chardonnay

This is an unoaked Bergundy Chardonnay that’s divine for the price. The light lemon coloured pour reveals a bright citrus nose, chiefly lemon and grapefruit, and these continue in the mouth. They’re flanked by spicy acidity and crunchy green fruits, before a return to citrus with lime zest lingering on the finish.

We always keep our eyes peeled for this wine to come on sale, though truth be told we’d buy it at full price too. Oak ageing gives a moreish richness to the melon and stone fruits that appear, but the buttery almost vanilla note is what steals the show bringing a tasty nudge of sweetness to proceedings.

If you like Waitrose’s Terre di Faiano Primitivo (and we do!) then there’s a good chance you’ll fall for this too. Also from Puglia, it’s a seductively inky pour revealing fleshy cherries, ripe plums, and a bed of oaky vanilla. They’re low yield grapes which put many producers off, but what is bottled is special and tastes a hell of a lot more expensive than it is – especially with the discount.

Chateau Tanunda Shiraz

Top notch value Barossa Valley Shiraz here. It’s super jammy and full-bodied with raspberry, blackberry, plum and cherry, but the sweetness is restrained nicely too. Mellow oak, peppery spice and vanilla round things off nicely.

Stemmari Passiata

An Italian blend of Syrah and Sicilian Nero d’Avola, lightly dried grapes bring a delicious rich sweetness to the plum, blackberry, and blueberry notes. Woody tobacco and vanilla take over to fill out the body, but somehow it retains a lightness that a wine like this normally wouldn’t.

Tilimuqui Fairtrade Organic Malbec

Tilimuqui’s organic Malbec is an absolute gem. Hailing from Argentina, it’s very much on the dry side, brimming with perfectly executed black fruits and chocolate. It’s silky and spicy too and probably on the lighter side of Argentinian Malbec which may go against it for some, but we enjoyed it.

Waitrose Rosé Wines March 2024

Alaina Rosé Laurent Miquel

Syrah, Grenache and Cinsault combine for this Languedoc Rosé, named after the winemaker’s daughter. It’s so summery, refreshing and elegant, and alive with crisp fruits and floral notes. The strawberry brings some richness but overall this is a light Rosé with good citric acidity and would be a dream pairing for many dishes.

Le Bijou Rosé de Sophie Valrose Coteaux de Béziers

This gem was on offer a few months ago so it’s great to see it back (even though it’s easily worth picking up at full price). Inspired by legendary Sophie Valrose who did great work supporting women vineyard workers, it’s a signature dry and crisp French Rosé from Languedoc. Strawberries and cream are lifted by subtle but vibrant lemon and enforced by steely minerality. Should cost more really (shh!)

Villa Maria Private Bin Sauvignon Blanc

An adventure from the start, the Sauvignon Blanc grapes are grown between historic valleys, picturesque mountains, and wild oceans, before reaching Villa Maria… beneath a volcano. The end product is a signature Marlborough profile in the glass – no bitterness, just refreshing crispness and stunning lightness. Think gooseberry, passion fruit, kiwi and green apple.

Morande Terrarum Semillon

Semillon was one of the grapes neglected by vineyards for a long time, but as part of a wider effort to revive old vines, it’s developing again. 100-year-old vines go into this complex dry white from Chile, delivering a waxy mouthfeel rich with crisp citrus, floral depths and sweet honey. There’re also some herbaceous green hints going on too. Really interesting wine.

Piccozza Pinot Bianco

Santodeno Sangiovese Appassimento

This is an Emilia-Romagna Sangiovese from Tenuta Santonedo that is one of the best value reds across all UK supermarkets. Staggeringly easy to drink, the grapes are hand-picked and slow-dried for seductive, ripe richness. Jammy blackberry and cherry come to the fore, with tasty vanilla and enough acidity cutting through. Every sip is super smooth and there really is no better bottle for Italian dishes.

Greasy Fingers Luscious Red

Greasy Fingers’ medium-bodied blend of Grenache and Shiraz is a tremendous pickup. Like their big and buttery Chardonnay, it’s made to sing with yummy, greasy food, but there’s a lot more to it. The mouthfeel is super silky and the balance between the Shiraz’s rich fruits and the Grenache’s fruity sweetness is pinpoint perfect. It’s so moreish and easy to love that we fail to see how it couldn’t be a crowdpleaser.

Journeys End Bluegum Merlot

Over to Stellenbosch now for this ruby red Merlot. The richness of flavour is noticeable straight away, delivering full blackberry and plum. But this is a really big Merlot so there’s so much more – oaky, earthy, almost smoky wafts and subtle graphite notes provide an intoxicating complexity. 14% but very drinkable and interesting,

PepperBox Shiraz

Fans of Aussie Shiraz, this is your stop. The nose is instantly captivating with a little liquorice, eucalyptus and of course, luscious dark fruits. The soft viscosity is lovely, as plums, blackcurrants and red cherries reveal themselves amongst the gently spicy depths. That spice comes from noticeable pepper that stands out. We love its indulgence, and think it would be perfect with Sunday Lamb.

Brancott Estate Sauvignon Blanc

One of the best textbook Marlborough Sauvignon’s in Sainsbury’s. The gooseberry nose, the tropical pineapple, and grapefruit tang, it’s all so elegant and crisp. The acidity is razor sharp, but there’s herbaceous nettle notes swirling around too and a well-roundedness to the citrus.

Amandla Our Future Sauvignon Blanc

We’ve praised Amandla tonnes before, because not only are they brightening up our shelves with great wine, they’re also an inspiring all black operation with vino star Praisy Dlamini at the hem. This is their zesty Sauvignon that’s full of sunshine – think ripe and tropical notes of pineapple, passion fruit and bright citrus. Dry and with a tip-top sharpness for food too.

Sainsbury's Verdeca Puglia IGT No 26

This is quite a new addition to the Sainsbury’s Discovery collection but has stood out to us and is well worth trying. It’s 100% Verdeca grape from Puglia, which you may never have tried before. Expect citrus with a flash of honey on the nose, leading into a eyebrow raising-ly clean palate of crisp minerality. The citrus that’s there is so fresh, and a little peach and florality adds depth. You just need to look at the label to know when to drink this – it works a treat with fish.

Atlantique Vinho Verde

A lovely Portuguese blend from the family-owned Casa Santos Lima, the grapes in the Minho are cooled by the Atlantic for wines with great freshness and aroma. The profile is that of a young white, with super crisp acidity and fresh fruits, most notably lemon, lime and apple.

Sainsbury's Taste the Difference Île-de-Beauté Rosé

This was on offer back in January, so we’re happy to see it back below a tenna (even if it is easily worth more). Niellucciu, Sciaccarellu, Grenache, Vermentinu and Syrah come together to make quite a mouthful, in more ways than one. Hailing from Corsica, it’s very much a dryer Rosé. A gentle bouquet welcomes the nose and the ripe berries and currants fill out the flavours. Stone fruits pop up before an undertone of pink peppery warmth on the finish. This is one of those Rosés that will win over white and red drinkers.

Freixenet Italian Still Rose

This bottle is also on discount for the same price at Morrisons, so there really is no better time to try it. We’ve all seen the signature bottle, but the wine inside is underrated by many. A blend of Italian Corvina and Garganega, every sip has a seductively soft feel and that’s before the red flood of strawberry and cranberry. Grapefruit brings some bitter balance, and overall it’s just a well put together fruit-forward, fresh Rosé.

Vibrant berries meet rich darker fruits and a touch of spice. It isn’t too heavy despite all of that, which is why it’s so well made.

Jurançon sits in the sun-drenched foothills of the Pyrenees and is known for indigenous grapes, like the Gros and Petit Manseng in this expression. Usually, you’ll find these make sweeter wines, and though this brings a little of that, it’s very pleasantly dry, zesty, and refreshing – think tangerine and melon. Unique and well worth a go.

This is a Waihopai Valley Pinot Grigio that stands out from the usual style. Behind the seductive salmon blush colouring is an expression brimming with stone fruits. Silver Moki Sauvignon Blush

If you’ve never taken to rosé then we urge you to give this a go, particularly if you’re not keen on the sweetness. This delivers much of the crisp Sauvignon Blanc and slicing citric acidity. Indulgent peach and strawberry offset this harmoniously, but they’re subtler than most rosé expressions. It’s the sophistication and elegance that blows our minds with this bottle though. Worth double the price.

Madame F Rosé Wine

There is so much to applaud with this rosé. First, of course, the snazzy frog. Second, its collaboration with a charity trying to create the first LGBTQ+ museum. And thirdly, the liquid. The Grenache and Shiraz combination brings vibrant crowd-pleasing red berries, and there’s enough citrus acidity to make it food-friendly too. Try a glass with seafood paella.

As beautiful as its Day of the Dead design, this San Juan Malbec is a real smooth operator. The grapes that go into this wine are from vineyards once abandoned but now thriving. Picked late, they deliver so many luscious ripe notes with intoxicating intensity to them. Think silky black fruits and woody spice. More generous than expected.

This is a fantastic supermarket pickup. It makes great use of grapes from across the whole Barossa area to get the most intense and sophisticated flavours. Oak ageing delivers mocha notes and brooding, rich blackberries and plums. One thing we’ve noticed with this is that giving it an hour to breathe really lets it sing that extra note. Serve with steak or hearty meats and enjoy.

Roodeberg Black

Morrisons had this South African red on offer a while ago, and we’re glad to see it back under a tenna… even though it’s worth more. It’s a red blend starring mostly Pinotage, a grape that’s undergone a great revival in South Africa. Packed with dark fruits, there’s also a slight char to the oak that works a treat. Rich with good structure, this is an easy-drinking gem perfect for meat dishes.

Lindemans Gentlemans Collection Cabernet Sauvignon

Henry J Lindeman moved from England to the Hunter Valley in Australia in 1843, when he opened his own winery to bring refined wines to the colony. Purple hues amongst a bright red colour and violet aromas welcome you in, before a black fruit flood. Chocolate and oak round things off nicely, and overall, this has the feel of a much more expensive Napa wine.

Then, the bold, distinctly buttery flavour hits, transporting this Aussie Chard to something closer to Cali styles. Creamy, indulgent and made to pair with delicious, greasy food.

Squealing Pig Sauvignon Blanc

If you’re after superb Sauvignon in the classic Marlborough style, then this bottle is perfect – simplicity and excellence. The Best Wine to Pair with Crisps

A packet of crisps and a glass of wine – these are two of the tastiest things we consume, but except the occasional overlap at a party, we don’t really think of them as a duo. But why not?

Well, wine is usually more associated with fine dining, but good flavour combos are good flavour combos, so there’s nothing to be snobby about with this dreamy pairing. We think of it as a more accessible and versatile alternative to cheese and wine pairings.

On the flipside, if you’re thinking that crisps and wine has the potential to go wrong, then yep, it does. There are some strong flavours and textures involved, but luxury hamper producers Baxters of Scotland and artisan sommelier Rory Anderson have been exploring the very best options.

White Wine

Riesling + Salt & Vinegar Crisps

The ever reliable and food-friendly Riesling is chosen to stand up to the pungent vinegar flavour here, with the razor acidity and fresh citrus softening it. The salty flavours help to emphasise the fruits in the wine, and the fat softens the acidity slightly, resulting in a well-balanced flavour experience.

Chardonnay + Sour Cream & Onion Crisps

Sour Cream & Onion are salty (like any crisp let’s be honest), so the sharp acidity of Chardonnay works nicely as a contrast, as do any tropical notes. The Sour Cream also helps to really emphasise the creamy, buttery notes you find in this style of wine, and the zing brought from both side works wonders.

Red Wine

Malbec + Smoky BBQ Crisps

For Smoky BBQ, you need something to handle the umami saltiness, and Malbec with its plentiful darker fruits, chocolatey spice and even, if you can find one, smoky notes, brings out the spice in the crisp seasoning and complements it greatly. As long as high tannins are avoided (salt amplifies tannins) and there’s decent acidity, this is a wonderfully indulgent combo.

Pinot Noir + Sweet Potato Crisps

A light and fruity Pinot with bright fruits stands up nicely to these moreish crisps. It appeases the sweetness of the potato but not enough to overpower them, and brings enough diverse earthy, fruity notes to add depth to the sweetness. Also, it’s usually lower tannins than most reds so you won’t run the risk of bitter tastes coming through.

Rosé

Provence Rosé + Prawn Cocktail Crisps

Prawn Cocktails’ notorious pong is love or hate for many, and there’s a lot going on to match up with. A light, dry and crisp Provence Rosé will work with the diverse sweetness, tang, and creamy flavours of the crisps. The understated sweetness will really come through with those berries and that florality.

Grenache Rosé + Thai Sweet Chilli Sensations Crisps

A more fruit-forward Grenache Rosé can contrast pleasantly with the warm spice of Thai Sweet Chilli. The extra sweetness of this style of Rosé also helps to balance the heat and should even out harmoniously. Ideally, a good acidic kick to bring some refreshment will cleanse the palate between crunches too.

Sparkling Wine

Champagne + Ready-Salted Crisps

A plain, super salty original crisp is pure carbs, fat and surprise surprise, salt. It’s a hell of a job to carve through all of that, so high acidity is required, and also something lovely and refreshing. There’s a simplicity to this combination that is so moreish, as the bubbles and elegance reset the palate before another crunch of crisp.

What Should I Drink With Chinese Food?

It’s difficult to generalise when it comes to pairing drinks with Chinese food. There are ‘eight great’ culinary traditions across the country, and on top of that some like Cantonese have been heavily anglicised for British tastes.

Having said that, the same pairing rules apply, which is lighter liquids for lighter dishes, bigger and more robust drinks for equivalent dishes. There is plenty of sweetness, sourness, and spice at play so pairing drinks with Chinese food does have the potential to go badly wrong. However, we’re here to help! Chinese New Year is February 10th, so if you’re celebrating or just fancy a Chinese feast, then we’ve got some recommendations below.

White Wine

Riesling

There’s a reason Riesling is a stalwart of these guides. If we’re have to pick one drink to pair with Chinese food, then it’s Riesling. More specifically, Spätlese Riesling, which just means late harvest grapes, so you get extra sweetness driving through, as well as that hefty kick of acidity. There’s a richness there usually, but the sweetness isn’t cloying at all – think more fruity, less cloying. That fruity sweetness makes is one of the few white wines that works well with Peking duck, slicing through the fatty meat but complimenting plum sauce. Any sweet and sour dishes and noodle-based dishes with a little grease – Riesling work great. Sesame chicken too. And seafood. Riesling is just so adaptable.

Red Wine

Syrah/Shiraz

Syrah or Shiraz (they’re the same grape remember) can be great with some Chinese dishes. Find an Australian Shiraz (Clare Valley for example) with fine tannins, sweetness, and peppery, smoky, richness and you’re onto a winner. Jammy, red fruits alongside the above traits will work so well with Peking duck and spicier dishes like beef in black bean sauce. It might be wise to avoid very light dumplings and other starters with Shiraz though, because it may overpower.

Grenache

Big, super fruity reds like Mourvèdre or Grenache come into play for hotter dishes, without the tannins to overdo the spice. Glazed ribs, black bean sauces, Szechuan beef – ripe reds can deal with it. Like the Shiraz, we would avoid these with lighter starters though. You could go down the Grenache Rosé route too for a well-rounded option – with a little acidity and fruity sweetness to play with.

Champagne

A crisp sparkler is always going to an option because of their world-beating palate-cleansing nature. Of course, Champagne is on the premium end of things, and Cava/Crémant, English Fizz and even Prosecco would work too, but as an all-rounder, this is a dreamy combo. A chilled glass eases the burn of spicier dishes and the fizz cleanses the grease. We want a Brut Champagne with some richness to cope with sweet and sour flavours too, and something like this can be the companion for spring rolls, dumplings, dim sum, shellfish, and spicier dishes.

Wheat and White Beer

Light witbiers (wheat) and Bavarian weissbiers (white) work nicely with Chinese food, so long as it isn’t super intense.
