The Wonderful Women Of Wine

For far too long, winemaking was a male-dominated industry, partly because of the male inheritance of vineyards in days of old and the culture that this set in place. Happily, attitudes have changed, thanks in no small part to some fantastic, trailblazing, female winemakers like these women below.

This International Woman’s Day, let’s raise a glass to all inspirational and innovative women in wine wherever they are!

Amandla - Praisy Dlamini

Heading up their stunning winemaking team in the Western Cape is one of the industry’s brightest stars, Praisy Dlamini who handpicks the grapes herself. To get to this point, she became proficient in Afrikaans, completed a degree in Agricultural Management, landed a 3 year internship at the Cape Winemakers Guild and became the first woman CWG Protégée, before rising through the ranks at Distell and Anchor Yeast. Alongside the drive and talent of Praisy, Amandla is very much a group endeavour with an all-female, all-black workforce from winemaker to accountant to stock controller.

Amandla Shiraz Zinfandel

This blend is so juicy and jammy without being overbearingly sweet with plum and ripe blackberry notes dominating the palate. With its silky smooth texture, it would work well with loads of foods, especially grilled meats, so fire up the braai!

Domaine Jones – Katie Jones

Katie Jones moved to Languedoc in 2000, taking up a role with Mont Tauch Co-op but when the recession hit, it became less about wine and more about money. Disenchanted, she turned to the cut-price vineyard she had bought a couple of years before in an area they call, ‘the land of great hope and early graves’ – ominous! With the hard work done to get it up and running, her early wines were an overnight success picking up award after award. She’s expanded since then, working three small and charming vineyards and has even overcome a tragedy in 2013, when vandals poured her entire year’s vintage down the drain, with the help of Naked Wines who clubbed together to support her, ‘the Queen of the Languedoc!’ The awards have continued coming and Katie is perfect proof of where persistence can get you.

Me & Monsieur Jones Rose 2021

A gorgeous rosé blend of Carignan and aromatic Muscat from Katie’s ‘Monsieur Jones’ vines, that’s brimming with vibrant red berries and a touch of aromatic elderflower. Super refreshing but with enough weight to stand up to hearty meals served alongside it.

Ramón Bilbao - Sara Bañuelo

Ramón Bilbao was Drinks International’s Most Admired Wine Brand in The World in 2022, one of many prestigious awards it’s picked up in its long history. Leading the winery for the last few years as Technical Director of Rueda is Sara Bañuelos, rooted in the world of wine from her family in Rioja. She studied agricultural engineering as well as working in oenology and viticulture and since finishing, she has worked in La Rioja and now Ramón Bilbao!

Houghton Wines - Courtney Treacher

Nestled in the heart of the renowned Margaret River region in Australia, with its colourful history of Scots, bandits and winemaking craftspeople since 1836, is Houghton Wines. Leading the charge since 2020 is Courtney Treacher, who began with Houghton as a cellar hand back in 2004. With only 14 winemakers in its entire history, Houghton relies on generational talent and makes wines that nod to iconic Western Australian styles, often with Bordeaux varietals, but modern varietal expression.

Domaine d’Arbousset - Julie Rouffignac

Alongside fellow oenologist Gérard Lafont, Julie unearths some of the most beautiful wines of Provence and the Rhône Valley. Domaine d’Arbousset is an organic, independent family-run vineyard, handed down through the generations that focuses its effort and expertise on a select few wines each year with respect for the environment they’re made in.

Tavel is a Cru in the southern Rhône Valley that produces only rosé wines that tend to be quite dark and dry. This one is deliciously full-bodied with a gorgeous, deep pink colour and notes of grapefruit, raspberries and spices. Try it with grilled meat, spicy cuisine, cheese and fruity desserts.

Mar de Frades - Paula Fandiño

Paula has been drawn to the countryside since a young age and more specifically, the vines that grow in them. She specialised in Technical Agricultural Engineering at University before specialising in viticulture and oenology. Under her guidance and inspired by the nearby Atlantic Ocean, Mar de Frades is now one of Spain’s leading wineries and she was recently named one of the most influential female enologists in the country by Drinks Business.

The blue bottle is stand-out for all the right reasons, and the same can be said for the classic Albariño wine inside. With notes of ripe lemon, wet rocks and sea spray, this bottle serves as a benchmark for the region.

McPherson - Jo Nash

Jo Nash has been Chief Winemaker at McPherson since 2012 when she became pregnant with her fourth child, but she’s been part of the Australian winery for decades. Jo’s relentless belief in beautiful wine led her to buy a 20 year old vineyard in Victoria’s remote Grampians without running it by the accountant first... that accountant’s name was Gary, hence the name of the bottle below!

Textura - Mariana Salvador

Part of a flourishing Portuguese wine scene, Textura is a relatively new winery on the slopes of Serra de Estrela in the Dão appellation. Overseeing the ‘low intervention, contemporary and fresh’ approach to winemaking is Mariana Salvador. With a trio of degrees in Food Engineering, Winemaking & Viticulture and Oenology, she has focused on varietals from the beginning, her favourite being Jaen which gives an amazing cool-fruited profile to their Tinto.

SUSANA BALBO - Susana Balbo

Simply put, Susana Balbo is a certified legend of winemaking. Graduating in the early 80s, the first female winemaker in Argentina, she has gone on to evolve her namesake brand into one of the most successful and respected wineries not just in Mendoza, but in the world. She also keeps it in the family, as her daughter Ana Lovaglio Balbo is now working with her as they expand into wellness and hospitality. In an industry run by men, she had to work twice as hard and still managed to completely redefine her trademark Torrontes as an elegant and classy wine. Three times President of Wines of Argentina, Susana is a true pioneer of Argentinian wine. Salud to the Queen of Torrontes!

Susan’s Torrontes is barrel-fermentated, with every drop then aged in new French oak for half a year with weekly batonage (lees stirring) to add a creamy texture. Cambria – Jill Russell

Jill was one of the first to enroll in the Wine and Viticulture major at California Polytechnic putting the ‘learn by doing’ motto into practice and getting to grips with all things Californian wine. Broadening her horizons, she studied in Adelaide too before taking on Assistant Winemaker duties at Stephen Ross Wine Cellars. Building her experience in the Loire Valley and with Paul Lato Wines, Jill took on the dream role of winemaker at Cambria. Continuing the tradition of Penner-Ash working with Willamette Valley growers is Kate Ayres. Kate’s first love was animals, but once she encountered the winemaking department at her University there was no going back. The Three Drinkers Launch their Inaugural, Limited Edition Irish Whiskey with Sliabh Liag Distillers

Aidy Smith and Helena Nicklin, executive producers and presenters of the award-winning, drinks travel show The Three Drinkers in Ireland on Amazon Prime, have launched a limited edition, red wine finished Irish Whiskey in collaboration with Sliabh Liag Distillers - just in time for St Patrick's Day.

A New Whiskey for The Three Drinkers

The Three Drinkers have collaborated with Sliabh Liag Distillers, one of the new wave of Distillers in Ireland and a partner distillery for the show, to produce an Irish whiskey. The team wanted to create a spirit that showcased the historic, subtly smoky style of Irish whiskey while maintaining some classic fruitiness and adding their own fingerprint as lovers of fine wine. The Three Drinkers Limited Edition Red Silkie Irish Whiskey hails from County Donegal on Ireland's wild Atlantic coast and is finished in red Pomerol wine barrels sourced from acclaimed producer, Clos L’Eglise in Bordeaux.

This is the second product from The Three Drinkers, who launched a 17 year Scotch whisky to celebrate their first show, The Three Drinkers do Scotch Whisky, and which sold out within a couple of days. 

“We always had the idea to create a product for every Three Drinkers series we produce,” says Aidy Smith. “Meeting James and Moira, founders of Sliabh Liag Distillers, in episode two of our Ireland show and seeing the amazing work they’d done with wine finishes before, confirmed that they would be the perfect partner to create our own version - and we love the result. Whether sipping neat or creating some signature cocktail serves, it offers the best of both worlds.”

Aidy & Helena have been open about their own journeys with mental health and are proudly supporting mental health charity My Black Dog, with £1 from every bottle sold going towards supporting a variety of initiatives. Q&A

Why Ireland?

After Scotland, Ireland was an obvious choice for us, fuelled by a desire on both sides to get in touch with our Irish ancestry. My (Helena’s) grandfather grew up near the Giant’s Causeway in Coleraine and my lasting memory of him is always with a glass of Irish whiskey in hand - a fond sensory memory that will always remind me of that side of my family.

Why did you decide to create this whiskey?

When researching each TV series, we spend weeks getting to know as much of the food and drinks culture of our locations that we can and it’s important to us that we allow the adventure to live on well after filming. For that reason, we seek to create a limited edition bottle of something special every time we produce a show, so there’s always a little treat to look forward to later on down the line. It also means you can re-watch the series with a glass in hand - and we all love an immersive experience!

What inspired you to create a wine finished Irish Whiskey?

We loved the idea of creating a wine-finished, Irish whiskey from the off because we’re all about delicious drinks but also, getting friends and viewers to try something they may not have thought about before. The Irish whiskey style is famously easy-drinking with its tendency to be fruity and silky. With the red wine cask finish, we hoped to produce something that would appeal to wine drinkers wanting to try whiskey for the first time as well as seasoned and whiskey lovers.

We’ve been working collectively for nearly thirty years in the wine and spirits industries and have fallen in love with all forms of liquid during that time. We wanted to take a fantastic example of Irish Whiskey and combine it with another world we are so close to: wine. 

Where did you source the casks from?

We wanted something bold, beautiful, fruity and iconic; something that definitely had to be ‘Old World’, because that’s where we are from. When James gave us a list of producers we could potentially work with, we saw Clos L’Eglise and jumped at the chance. Why wouldn’t we?

Why did you choose this particular charity, My Black Dog?

Helena’s Reason: Most of us have had some sort of run in with our own mental health, especially with the pressures lockdown laid at our doors. I’ve seen first hand the damage that spirals of self doubt, anxiety and depression can have on individuals, their families and entire friendship circles. I have also, however, seen how quickly getting help can work wonders, thanks to the individuals at charities like My Black Dog. It does not only feel miraculous and surprisingly simple (when you get it right), but immensely life affirming. 

Aidy’s Reason: Having grown up with Tourette Syndrome, mental health has always been a topic I've had to become more than comfortable with. 80% of us with TS experience co-occurring conditions like anxiety, depression, ADHD, dyslexia and so on - this can make life turn into quite a steep mountain at times. Charities like My Black Dog reinforce how important mental health is and save lives by getting people the help they need before it's too late.

Anosmia: The devastating effects of losing your sense of smell

With a wine tasting career and fragrance studies leading her passions, when Helena lost lost her sense of smell for three weeks with Covid, she panicked. Very luckily for her, it came back. This is not always the case with anosmia, sadly. Here’s why you need to know about this debilitating ‘hidden disabilty’.

Our sense of smell is so much more important than we think. Sadly, it’s not until we lose it that most of us realise this fact. It is a hidden disability.

Covid-19 certainly raised the awareness of viral anosmia; losing your sense of smell after exposure to a virus, but the devastating effects this can have on a person from extreme weight loss to severe depression, are still not discussed or recognised in medicine as much as they could and should be. Smell is, after all, our most primitive sense, governing our most basic instincts as well as memory and all sorts of emotions. Losing it, whether total (anosmia) or partially (hyposmia) can have a devastating effect on our mental health and quality of life. 

This Anosmia Awareness Day, I want to highlight some of the negative ways anosmia can affect people, to raise awareness and help find new avenues of research into finding a cure.

Eating problems

Even hyposmia can have a significant effect on the enjoyment of food, which often leads to a lost interest in eating, which can then in turn become so severe, it leads to eating disorders and malnutrition. A desperate attempt to taste something can lead to the addition of too much salt or sugar, which brings its own negative effects on health. 

Social disconnection

Anosmiacs report feeling lonely and disconnected from the world, unable to engage in their environment or bond as well with other humans. Relationships appear more strained as your subscious is aware it is ‘missing something’ from the conversation - and it is. Bonding even with loved ones is harder. Losing a major part of one of life’s greatest human pleasures - to eat and drink with a tribe -  can also be devastating. We feel left out of a social connection, even if we are physically present. 

Depression & Anxiety

These combined effects of anosmia can lead to paranoia, anxiety, depression and anhedonia; the inability to feel pleasure. How do we know if we - or our home - smells bad or not? Did we leave the gas on? Will I know if I step in something? How can we tell if what we are serving our guests is well cooked? It’s easy to see how anxiety can be ramped up and depression can find a way in, as so many of life’s pleasures are stripped away. 

Danger

Our sense of smell is crucial for warning us of potential dangers, often numerous times a day. From smoke or a gas leak to food that has gone off and bread caught, burning away in the toaster. Without it, we are stripped of some crucial survival skills. 

Can anything be done to help anosmia?

There’s not currently an official cure for anosmia but in some cases, retraining the nose to smell has had some positive effects, so it’s worth a try. Anosmia awareness charity Fifth Sense suggest smelling the same strong scents for around twenty seconds each day while really paying attention to what you are doing. Essential Oils are the most effective here as they are strong and they last a long time. Pick four very different ones will have a greater effect. They suggest rose, lemon, clove and eucalyptus.

What Drinks Go Best With Pancakes?

When Shrove Tuesday rolls around, pancakes are obviously the star of the show. However, finding the right drink to wash them down levels up everything. Don’t get us wrong, coffee, tea, juice and the usuals are fine, but drinks like these are how you celebrate in style.

The variety of toppings can make the accompanying drink a tricky one to decide, but whatever you’re going for this Pancake Day, we’ve got an idea below to perfectly match.

WINE

Fizzy Cocktail

Sparkling wine cocktails are gorgeous alongside pancakes. If you’ve gone for rich and thick toppings like banana then the light bubbles cut through wonderfully, and any fruity flavour will obviously complement.

A glass of orange juice is obviously a safe bet when it comes to washing down pancakes but why not add some bubbles (Cava is great) for an even more refreshing Mimosa?

Or perhaps a beautiful Bellini if you’re using peach?

Sweet Wines

If your pancakes aren’t too sweet, then a sweet sparkling wine or dessert wine could be the way to go for tonnes of flavour without the sweetness overkill.

Toppings like cinnamon and apple would pair nicely with Sauternes, or even a Tokaji if you can get it. You can generally expect notes of apricot, honey, butterscotch, peaches, toasted baking spices with enough fresh acidity to slice through the pancakes.

Rosé

A good sparkling Rosé sits ideally next to any strawberries, raspberries, or blueberries on your pancakes. Anything heavier or stodgier than that and we’d avoid it but for lighter toppings this works wonders.

The mirroring of fruits is subtle enough to enhance but not spoil, so look for a dry, natural tasting elegant Rosé that holds with great fizz. We’ve listed some of our favourites here, but the Mirabeau La Folie Rosé is perfectly dry, refreshing, crisp and versatile too!

Whites

Now, sweet toppings are by far and away the most popular but let’s not forget savoury options.

Rich toppings like cheese and ham pancakes call for a crisp white that’s highly aromatic with good acidity. Think off-dry Riseling, Pinot Blanc or Gavi, but many others would work well!

Have You Tried Wine From China?

Over here in the West, you might be forgiven for not having China top of mind when it comes to listing countries that produce fine wine - or any wine for that matter. As things stand, the Chinese wine output is still tiny, especially when you compare it to China’s famous spirit ‘Baijiu’ and the amount of international wine brands that are imported. Evidence has been found of grape fermentation in China and along the Silk Road dating back thousands of years before Christ, so it’s not exactly new. The modernised industry as we see it now however is only just starting to get going - and we couldn’t be more excited about it.

How to find Chinese wine in the UK

Of course, when a country’s output is so small, we tend to not be able to find much outside the country in question. Until now, that is. With the rise of wine companies championing producers from less obvious locations or smaller, more boutique producers that would never be looked at by the larger conglomerates, we’ve never had such good access to quality wines from around the globe. One such company that exists to do precisely this is Propeller. Located in Sherborne, Dorset, Propeller have set themselves up to help producers entering the UK market for the first time to jump the numerous hurdles they’ll inevitably face. At the same time, they assist with brand positioning and marketing and help get the wines into top merchants and wholesalers. It is through Propeller Wines that we were introduced to a fantastic producer based in Ningxia, China called Xige Estate. Tasting their wines was a real treat and - if we’re honest- a bit of a surprise. Here’s what you need to know about Xige Estate in China and what you should taste.

Wine from Ningxia, China

Ningxia is a very small, autonomous region located in north-central China with thousands of years of rich history. Today, despite its extreme climatic conditions and temperature swings, it has a growing reputation for premium winemaking, with some describing it as ‘The Bordeaux of China’ or ‘China’s Penfolds’. The first winery appeared here just over twenty years ago and now, the region boasts over a hundred wineries, with more licences being applied for all the time. Around 38,000ha of vines have already been planted, comprising at least sixty different varieties and this number is expected to grow exponentially over the next ten years thanks to substantial backing from the government and private investors. At the beginning, around fifteen years ago, winemakers were cautious and stuck to the famous Bordeaux grapes. It’s true that many of these are now flourishing, but some in the industry such as Xige have been keen to do things a little differently; to experiment with other grapes to get the very best out of the terroir here - and to great effect.

Xige Estate, Helan Mountain, Ningxia

Xige Estate was founded in 2017 and finished in 2019, though the wines belonging to the estate had already been in place for twenty years. The winery is the brainchild of investor and ex-Changyu winemaker Zhang Yanzhi and was founded with the aim to show that Chinese wine deserves a place on the world stage of not just fine wine, but wine that showcases its terroir to give it a real sense of place, even on a large scale. And it’s not just the world’s wine lovers that benefit; Ningxia was previously a relatively impoverished region that is now benefiting enormously from the growing wine industry. Xige Estate, for example, directly employs 300 people, with a team of 4 -700 more alone involved and employed in the upkeep of the vineyards, which are currently spread over 2000 hectares.

Wine style at Xige Estate

In terms of style, Xige Estate is placing a strong focus on more elegant, fresh and understated wines that work wonderfully with a wide range of international cuisines rather than uber-concentrated, jammy, fruit bombs. After trialling various grape varietals over their substantial vineyards, the team at Xige Estate have found that Chardonnay, Malbec and Cabernet Gernsicht, which is possibly an evolution of Carmenere, really shine in their Ningxia terroir. Experiments continue with Marselan, Gewürztraminer, Sauvignon Blanc, Dunkelfelder, Chenin Blanc and Syrah. Having tasted the range, it’s clear to see that with Propeller’s help, Xige estate really could be the international face of Chinese wine.

Another truly premium wine, the N50 is exceptional. A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon with Cabernet Gernischt taken from Xige Estate’s finest vineyard plots, this wine has achieved the highest critical acclaim of any Chinese wine so far, being described as ‘a masterclass in structure, restraint and elegance.’ We can only agree. Jade Dove, Single Vineyard Cabernet Gernischt, 2018

At the top of the wine tree at Xige is this 100% Cabernet Gernischt, produced from vines that are 25-30 years-old, so are genuinely ‘old vines’ by Chinese standards. Here, the Cabernet Gernischt offers delicate, fine tannins and an intriguing nose of dried rose petals and Chinese herbs. So different from, say, a Chilean Carmenère to whom it’s meant to be related, this is a benchmark example of a Chinese version.

On the 22nd January 2023, we start to celebrate Chinese New Year. This period is also known as the Lunar New Year, which changes date every year because it is based on the sun and moon cycles, which are usually around 20-50 days behind our normal Gregorian calendar. This period will always happen between the 20th January and the 20th February and celebrations last around sixteen days. This year, the Chinese New Year’s day is Sunday 22nd January and it ends with the traditional Lantern festival on February 5th. It is the year of the rabbit! We raise a glass to this new beginning with four super sips, all hailing from China. 

Evidence of wine grape fermentation in China dates back years before Chirst, but its winemaking prowess was eclipsed by the rise of spirits - Baijiu in particular. Nowadays, winemakers are keen to show that China can also compete on the world stage with fine wines that showcase specific terroir.
