Is this the best wine cooler ever?

Heilo eclipse wine cooler thethreedrinkers.com the three drinkers

We’ve finally discovered a brilliant way to cool wine down that solves loads of problems! Heilo is a new company that is taking cooling wine to the next level with its space saving, incredibly efficient coolers.

The Eclipse

The Eclipse (as seen above) is a solid metal structure that cools within a couple of minutes of having ice added to the eclipse section. It stays very cold, bottle after bottle. As there is no messy water, the ice doesn’t melt as quickly, so you use less. Other big selling points are that the bottle doesn’t get wet and drip everywhere and the label stays dry. Designed with the perfect amount of space around the the bottle, cool air hugs it without dissipating too quickly, which means it can be a compact package, taking up less space on your table. So, no water, no mess, space efficient. What’s not to love? It comes in a choice of six finishes and retails for £55 - 59.

The Heilo

The Heilo design is more of a classic cooler, only better. Add just 5 ice cubes at the bottom and pop in your bottle of already chilled wine and it will keep its cool for a lot longer than most. There’s no condensation either, thanks to the raised platform inside which allows air to circulate. The premium finish is super smooth and you can engrave it too for an extra special gift. Heilo comes in a choice of three finishes and costs RRP £49.

Jerry Can Cocktail Bar

From bespoke light fixtures artfully fashioned from beer cans to chic handbags made from canvas coffee sacks, we’ve seen our share of creative repurposing. But Copenhagen design team Danish Fuel is taking upcycling to another level with their sleek, wall-mountable Jerry Can Bar Cabinet made from—wait for it—old kerosene containers from World War II. The cans, originally called Wehrmacht Kanisters, were designed by the German military in 1939 to hold kerosene, water, and gasoline in preparation for the war. They were coded by colour to differentiate between the liquids they contained and eventually dubbed “Jerries”, which was the nickname for Germans during the war.

The inventive team of designers at Danish Fuel collects the discarded Jerry Cans from military surplus centres and initiates a 3-week process of drilling, sanding, burning, adding a powder coat—all sorts of highly involved procedures that result, against all odds, in a battered old gas canister emerging a gleaming custom-made bar you’d be proud to hang on your wall and fill with a few of your most treasured spirits and glassware. Jerry Can Bar Cabinet is the classiest form of “reduce, reuse, recycle” we’ve seen yet.

Aromaster Master Wine Kit

Aromaster Master Wine Kit thethreedrinkers.com.jpg

The folks over at Aromaster have created an extensive kit aimed to help educate wine enthusiasts about the variety of aromas coming from their wines, which will further improve one’s tasting abilities. Master Wine Aroma Kit was developed by sommeliers to be viewed as a library of wine scents. Use the library as an educational tool or a friendly game to test your nose.

The kit combines the 88 most common scents found world wide in sparkling, white, red, and sweet wines, a manual of how to appropriately use the aromas, the Wine Aroma Wheel Booklet, a board game, and four metal tokens designed by artist Yves Lemay. The aromas are split into the following groupings: fruity (white or red wine), floral, vegetal, mineral, yeast, malolactic fermentation, maturation in oak barrel, aged white wine, aged red wine, and wine faults. The Wine Aroma Wheel Booklet is a visual representation of the most common aromas found in wine; this will become your greatest companion during tastings. The board game allows players to travel across wine producing regions of the world and tests their ability to appropriately identify wine aromas. Use the four metal tokens as game pieces.

The Master Wine Aroma kit really has thought of everything—educational, fun, and some friendly competition! Check out Aromaster’s other aroma based products covering cognac, whisky, beer, sake, coffee, and cigar and become an all-around aroma master!

The Durand Corkscrew

The Durand Corkscrew thethreedrinkers.com.jpg

The one thing that stands between me and a vintage wine is self-control.

Okay, just kidding. It’s actually the wine cork. That oh-so-fragile cork that will—if you’re lucky—just break in half when you try to take it out of the bottle. Or, in the worst case, just practically disintegrate into your wine.

Luckily the wine experts behind the Durand have made the cork in a mature wine a less scary prospect. They’ve developed a special patented corkscrew with just the right touch.

Like many corkscrews, the Durand has a helix that is screwed into the cork. But the Durand also has a second component with blades that is used in conjunction with screw to support the cork during the removal process.

The Durand corkscrew comes with directions and is easy to use. It’s a good investment if you open a lot of older wines, just don’t expect this corkscrew to be foolproof. Care is still needed with fragile corks.

The Jet Engine Coffee Machine

Once we got over our initial fear that Paolo Mastrogiuseppe’s avant garde espresso machine was silently preparing to fire projectile missiles in our direction, we were able to better appreciate that A: it’s an absolutely stunning life-meets-art, gracefully designed, innovative concept in design and B: it makes a damn fine cup of coffee.

Mastrogiuseppe is no stranger to the concept of marrying art and engineering. The South African designer spent the last few years making Grand Prix-inspired coffee brewers shaped like Formula One race car engines. Prior to that he worked with his engineer father, Raffaelle, manufacturing components for the automotive industry followed by a period of study at the Johannesburg Academy of Design and Drafting.

Aviatore Veloce, Mastrogiuseppe’s latest permutation in the world of espresso-meets-engine, is crafted from aviation-grade aluminium alloy, stainless steel, and aluminium bronze. Though its intricate shape mimics a prototype of a military jet engine, the actual operation is remarkably simple—add coffee, add water, pick a single or double shot, and hey presto, a perfect steaming espresso. From the jet engine gently placed on your countertop. Your coolness factor just shot through the ceiling with the force of, well, a missile.
