Sips and Tips to Help the Bees!

At this point we all know about the importance of bees and we all know that the bee population is decreasing at a scary rate, but what can we do to help? Of course we can plant more wildflowers as a source of food and shelter for bees, or make sure to buy veggies that have not been grown with harmful pesticides. Alternatively, you can always get yourself one of the following drinks and know that your Friday night glass of something is in fact helping the bees!

Beeble Honey Whiskey

Beeble whiskey started with just one bee-hive. The beekeepers didn’t want to waste the last bits of honey still stuck to the frames taken from the hives, so they had the brilliant idea to soak the frames in whiskey, creating a dreamy honey infused spirit! This drink has delightful sweet and floral notes, and is perfect over ice. This is a great company to support, working hard to minimise waste as well as supporting the Bees for Development charity.

Gosnells Wildflower Mead

A local London company, Gosnell’s has made a delightful mead (a honey based drink) using the nectar of 45 different indigenous plant species. The result is a light, refreshing low alcohol drink perfect to take along to your summer picnics, or to use as an alternative to tonic water in your next G&T! If you are looking for another excuse to buy a couple of these tins, Gosnell’s is also running a “Pints for Pollinators” campaign where for every pint of Wildflower Mead sold, they will donate 5p to the Bumblebee Conservation Trust!

Spier Wines

Of course there are multiple vineyards actively helping to protect the bees, but for now let’s highlight Spier. This farm from Stellenbosch not only has amazing value-for-money wines, it also is using natural farming wherever possible! By lowering the use of harmful pesticides and herbicides, the bee population is able to flourish (and of course help out with pollination - an essential step in grape growing). We suggest you try the 2020 Pinotage. This wine has lovely smooth tannins, as well as red and black fruit flavours such as dark cherries and juicy ripe plums.

Afon Mêl

Another great mead option, this time hand-crafted in Wales! All honey is sourced from the Afon Mêl farm, where the bees' habitat is the number one priority. Try the award-winning Heather Mead. This is a beautiful golden drink with notes of caramel and of course - heather.

Beesou Honey Aperitif

Perhaps this slightly different bee-interpretation might tickle your fancy? This natural bitter aperitif made with British honey as well as cinchona bark, pink grapefruit and bitter orange. Warner’s Honeybee Gin

Warner’s distillery is another classic British distillery doing their part in helping our yellow and black friends. The distillery has even hired their own personal beekeeper for the farm to make sure that the bees are happy and healthy. The Honeybee gin has won multiple awards, and you sure can taste it! This gorgeous gin has notes of elderflower, rose and chamomile with a lovely sweet note from the honey.

The Best Whisky to Gift this Christmas

For those of us who love whisky Christmas is a time to enjoy it all the more, whether that be for oneself, to share with others, or even to buy as gifts. I believe there are whiskies which are special at most price points, so I will be giving you great suggestions you can find in a supermarket, but also a range of bottles you most definitely can’t. It is Christmas after all, and the festive holidays should be for everyone. From sweet ex-bourbon casks, sherry casks, port casks and smoky whisky, these are my Christmas crackers for 2022. Starting with the two best-selling single malt whiskies in the world. So without further ado, let’s get to it…

Glenfiddich 12 Year Old

At any one point in time, it is never certain whether this whisky or the next is the best-selling single malt in the world. They are so well matched, that they both take the lead over the other from time to time. Although they are equally very good, I do have a favourite, and this is it. With great balance and lots of fruity Speyside orchard fruits, this whisky will often be on special offer over Christmas and is a great gift. Although I’m not sure if it’d make it into wrapping paper in my house.

Glenlivet 12 Year Old

I recently re-visited this distillery and in the tasting after the tour was presented with the 12-year-old as the first whisky. We then had two others from the range, and in my mind, although it was certainly not the most expensive, it was the best. It is so well balanced with apples and pears, with a little honey and vanilla, it’s hard not to see why it holds such regard in many people’s minds. And already on sale until January 2023 at Waitrose

Thompson Brothers 8 Year Old Blended Malt SRV5

The Thompson brothers, Phil and Simon have gained legendary status as independent bottlers, and the way they have managed that is by bottling great whisky at great prices. And this is no exception. With complex aromas and flavours of melon, limes, grapefruits and bananas with touches of candlewax and a tiny bit of smoke, this is a great blended malt whisky.

Glenmorangie Nectar d’Or 

This is a real sweetie for the festive season. Finished in Sauternes wine casks, it has honey sweetness and vanilla to the fore. The sweet French white wine casks giving a syrup sweetness and viscosity. Sipped by itself or drunk in a highball with grapefruit soda, or ginger ale, this is an easy going crowd pleaser.

Glenfarclas 15 Year Old

A stalwart of sherry matured whiskies, the 15 Glenfarclas is my all-time favourite ex-sherry cask Scotch. With the classic Christmas cake flavours, there are also nutty walnut flavours with orange peel, dates, and raisins. With a little water, it becomes even juicier. A great whisky for cold winter weather being very complex and easy to drink at the same time.

Glen Grant 18 Year Old

In 2016 Glen Grant relaunched their range and thankfully included this 18 year old. It is a mix of ex-bourbon and ex-sherry casks but is so balanced there is not a predominance of flavour from either. With lots of caramel, vanilla and raisins there are complex waves of sweetness which meet the palate. If you don’t like big heavy sherried whiskies then this would definitely be one for you.

Glenturret 15 Year Old 2022 Release

This is the regular annual release from Glenturret of their 15 year old and like previous releases they have kept the abv on the higher side which gives a big punch of flavour. They’ve used a mix of casks which add to the complexity with both sweet and spicy notes, mixed with pepper, pine resin and lots of dried fruit. A big whisky for a big celebration.

Fettercairn 18 Year Old

This is a very unusual whisky. Scotch must be matured in oak, but where that oak comes from can vary. Traditionally ex-bourbon and ex-sherry casks are used, as well as Port, Madeira, and many other wine casks, but never before has a Scottish oak cask been used. Whyte and Mackay, the owners of Fettercarin have a comprehensive Scottish oak project which this 18-year-old has benefited from. The type of oak makes a great deal of difference, with Scottish oak having a peppery spicy note on the back palate and finish beyond all the fruit cake and soft spice. Each batch is pretty limited, so grab one while you can.

Dalmore King Alexander III

One of the most complex yet easy drinking whiskies I know. This is matured in six different types of casks and then blended. It is a grand sipper, with lots of soft spice, winter berries and a zesty, oaky edge keeping the palate lively, this is a long-time favourite of mine. Decadence in a glass and definitely a special whisky.

Bowmore 22 Aston Martin 2nd Release

I have to thank my fellow drinker Aidy for opening his bottle for his Christmas party last weekend, otherwise, I’m not sure this would have been on my radar, but it definitely is now! A big rich complex dram with lots of fruit cake and spice, nuts, toasted oak and a good dollop of sweet beach bonfire smoke. This is an absolutely brilliant whisky from Bowmore. Sold out in most places, buy it if you see it, or find it at auction. It’s not only a great present, tastes great, but I think it will increase quite a bit in price, so maybe one to hang onto.

Glenrothes 32 Year Old 1988 Cask 16546 Gordon and MacPhail

This whisky is simple in its conception. Fill an American oak hogshead, let it mature for thirty two years, and when ready, bottle it. Simple is not how I would describe the result though. There are subtle flavours of white meadow flowers and fennel which mix well with lots of complex honey and fresh vanilla pods. Fruit salad in syrup and a little fine oak and sandalwood make this a very special whisky for a special gift if you can bare to give it away!

Royal Salute 62 Gun Salute

I’ve been banging on about malt whisky, but now it’s time for a blend. The perception of blends is that they are cheaper and blander. This couldn’t be further from the truth. This whisky has great complexity with the whiskies contained within having been matured for over 40 years. Inlaid in 24 carat gold, this is the ultimate Christmas gift!

For those who are wondering, ‘What is Crémant?’ It’s a sparkling wine made using exactly the same method that is used to make Champagne. Once not thought of to be particularly well produced, current-day Crémant is stunning and massively over-delivering given its price and quality. It has continued to fly under the radar for many years but it won’t for much longer if we have anything to do about it! Here are the bottles we tasted this week:

Dima's Vodka - Excellence in a Bottle

I judge spirits for the IWSC including vodka. Technically speaking, a vodka should get a high score if it is clean and clear meaning there is very little flavour, and it is smooth with good clarity. Every year this brings about a conversation between the judges regarding vodka which has flavour. Not that the vodka is flavoured, but that there is a positive flavour. This can reflect the materials the vodka has been made from, for example, an earthy flavour where the vodka has been made of potatoes, or a light cereal note when made from wheat. The texture also comes into play with vodka being creamy in texture being scored highly. The general consensus between judges these days is that a clear clean vodka gets a high score, but a vodka that has great texture and taste, as well as clarity, will get an even higher score.

This brings me to a vodka that has won medals recently and as it was tasted blind, I only got to drink it under its brand name relatively recently. Good friend Douglas Blyde suggested I try Dima’s Vodka. A Ukrainian vodka created by its namesake Dima Deinega. Dima, although brought up in the UK is from Ukraine and has a passion for vodka.

What Does Dima’s Vodka Taste Like?

Dima’s Vodka is made from three types of organic grain. Wheat, Rye and Barley. These three grains give the vodka flavour without the vodka tasting like it has been flavoured in any way. The flavours are subtle but include a nuttiness on the nose together with a biscuit aroma. The palate brings in rye bread and hints of vanilla, a cereal earthiness and is sweet with fabulous viscosity allowing the spirit to be held on the palate to warm and develop. The finish brings in a liquorish note alongside the nutty flavour and there is a light chilli spice. This spirit can be savoured and is very flexible.

How Should I Drink Dima’s Vodka?

It makes a great base for cocktails as it can stand up to other favours well. Chilled it makes a great martini and keeping a bottle in the freezer is an excellent idea. However, in Ukraine, they eat pickles with vodka and a small, chilled pickle alongside a neat shot of Dima’s Vodka is a great way to experience the flavours of the vodka as the sweet flavours are cut by the salty and crunchy pickle.

It’s not often I single out specific products for praise, but I will continue to do so if a product really stands out as excellent in its category, and Dima’s Vodka certainly does that.

Nikka Whisky From The Barrel

Whisky? From a barrel? Never…

Though the name may seem to be a friendly reminder as to how the whisky was made, Nikka’s intention with ‘Whisky From The Barrel’ is actually to make you feel as if you are one of the blenders trying the whisky straight ‘from the barrel’. Even the bottle itself oozes luxury, its simple white label reminiscent of an expensive perfume bottle - but with a much less hefty price tag! More than 100 different batches of malt and grain whiskies are blended to create a very rich and flavourful whisky. The notes of dried fruits, spices and caramel are present alongside a heavy kick of alcohol - so you might want to give it a go with an ice cube. However you choose to drink it though, Nikka Whisky is one to pop in your basket ASAP.

Roku Gin

Aldi Shirayuki Japanese Sake

Yep, you’re not going mad - that’s Aldi making their own exclusive sake (and selling it for a fiver - which is more than three times cheaper than the same size bottle at Selfridges)! Launched for the Tokyo Summer Olympics, Aldi’s sake from Japan’s Itami region is being marketed as ‘an adventurous alternative to dry white wine’. While sake is the perfect companion to traditional Asian cuisine - Aldi’s even promoting it to be drunk alongside a cheeky fish and chips and we couldn’t agree with this match more! Unfortunately for our international friends, the Shirayuki Japanese Sake is only available in Aldi stores across the UK - but you’re very welcome to hop on a plane and grab a bottle! This release has got us super excited to see what Aldi’s got up its sleeve in the future...

Akashi-Tai Shiraume Umeshu

Made from steeping plums in liquor and sugar, umeshu is often mislabelled as plum wine - it’s not wine made from fermented plums, it’s alcohol infused with plums. Umeshu is closer to a liqueur in how it's made, but in taste has been compared to a vermouth or a fortified wine. Though it’s pretty easy to make at home - Akashi-Tai Shiraume Umeshu is a properly tasty pick if you don’t want to wait the three months or more that infusion takes. Shiraume has been made with premium sake as the base alcohol. Take it chilled in the garden this summer, but look forward to drinking it warm for a cozy winter treat.

The Best Beer to Drink this Summer

As the summer pushes out one more month, we’re breaking down some of our favourite beers (some of which are a little strange) to drink on those warm sunny days. There’s even some non-alcoholic beer on the list, which is definitely worth checking out!

Corona Extra

Undoubtedly the beer of the last one and a half years, Corona has become even more of a hit with thousands of people enjoying the ice cold irony of the name topped with a lime wedge. While brilliant straight out of the ice bucket with lime, we’re loving the Corona cocktails popping up all over the internet. Our personal favourite is the ‘Corona Sunrise’, which can be made in the bottle using tequila, orange juice, grenadine and lime juice and turns the beer a punchy grapefruit colour. Since we can’t go to Mexico, let’s make Mexico come to us!

Snake Venom Beer

Are you looking for a challenge this summer? How about a 67.5% beer challenge? No, we haven’t put the decimal point in the wrong place - Scottish brewery Brewmeister’s ‘Snake Venom’ is officially the world’s strongest beer at 67.5% ABV, which is more than most vodkas! This beer isn’t meant to be chugged, however, as a bright yellow warning tag recommends you take it in 35ml portions. Even still, it’s an impressive feat and the beer is so alcoholic that it can’t carbonate! This one of a kind beer does come with a bit of a price tag, but then again, extracting venom from snakes is tricky work!

Damm Inedit Beer

From the packaging, this beer looks more like an expensive champagne than a Spanish wheat beer. It’s Estrella’s luxury makeover that happens halfway through the movie, Inedit’s gorgeous golden colour encased in a glossy dark bottle. Created by one of Spain’s top chefs, Ferran Adrià and a team of sommeliers, Inedit is flavoured with spices that create a complex aroma and expertly pair with many dishes. Whether sour, salty, bitter, spicy or buttery, Inedit compliments whatever you’re cooking with style and flair. While it may be an older creation, it is a luxury beer not to be missed.

Brewdog Punk AF (AF for alcohol-free, not AF for as f-)

Being teetotal in summer isn’t always the easiest thing to do, especially when it seems everyone is out having a tipple in the sun. However, Brewdog has knee slid onto the scene with their new Punk AF beer and is making not drinking pretty damn sexy. Full of tropical flavours and pine but still tasting like beer, Punk AF is rocking our world with its funky houndstooth can. Never again fear feeling not cool when you’re not drinking - Punk AF is here. And it’s cool.

BONUS BEER: Brains’ Bayside

This beer has been placed in its own special section as it might be a bit tricky to find at the moment, but is still worth the mention. Bayside Lager is Welsh Brewery Brains’ newest addition to their line of Welsh beers and is currently only available on tap at their pubs and B&Bs across Wales (sad face). If you do find yourself in a Brains pub, run to the bar and grab a pint (or three) of this crisp, light and very drinkable lager - it’s a perfect summer drink and a true tribute to Welsh living.
