The Best Rum Cocktails for Summer

the best rum cocktails for summer the three drinkers

When it comes to kicking back, shutting your eyes and feeling the bliss of the sun on your skin, the cocktail most people want plonked in front of them involves rum. Nothing quite captures the essence of tropical paradise like it, and with a variety of styles, it’s easy to bring your own twist.

Pool lounging, garden parties, outdoor bars, picnics or simply sat by a sunny window, these rum cocktails get you in that easy-going sun-kissed mood. We’ve included some classic favourites that are tailor made for this time of year, as well as some playful twists.

Mojito

Mojito the best rum cocktails for summer the three drinkers

Sometimes the obvious choice is obvious for a reason. Cuba’s favourite serve might not be quite as simple as lumping ingredients together, but with only a touch of muddling required and simple ingredients, it’s well worth it. Rum, mint and lime create the ultimate refresher; a breezy, fresh timeless favourite to cool you down and unwind.

Ingredients
50ml white rum
Juice of 1 lime
1 tsp sugar/ 15ml sugar syrup
A handful of mint leaves
Soda water
Garnish: mint

 Method
Crush mint leaves with lime juice and sugar syrup. Add ice and rum, then top with soda water. Stir gently, garnish with mint, and enjoy the essence of summer relaxation.

Top Tip: Never slice or dice the mint, always crush the leaves gently to unlock all those flavoursome oils.

Strawberry & Basil Mojito

Strawberry & Basil Mojito the best rum cocktails for summer the three drinkers

This variation screams summer. We’re swapping the mint for basil and of course if we’re doing that, strawberry is getting involved. The best method for including strawberries is via a simple syrup – see the method. The lime remains to bring that vivid tang and the basil brings that fragrant herbal sweetness. If a cocktail is ever to put a smile on your face, it’s this one.

Ingredients
50ml white rum
5 basil leaves
15ml lime juice
20ml strawberry syrup
Soda water
Garnish: basil sprig and strawberry slices

 Method
It’s very easy to make the strawberry syrup by adding water, sugar and strawberries to a pan in the ratio 1:1:1/2. 12 or so minutes of medium cooking will dissolve and infuse everything, before straining into a jar. Use once cool or refrigerate for up to a month. Other than that, it’s a classic mojito method – muddle the basil gently with the syrup and lime juice, pour in your rum whilst adding ice and top up with soda water. Delish.

Piña Colada

Piña Colada the best rum cocktails for summer the three drinkers

Another icon that we just can’t leave out. This sunny serve also involves three bold flavours working together –coconut, pineapple and rum. The Piña Colada is a perfect summer companion, blending the rich flavours of aromatic coconut cream with the tangy sweetness of pineapple juice. It’s a drink that transports you straight to a sunny beach with every sip, making it a favourite for poolside lounging or any summer gathering. Use fresh juice if possible! A proper taste of tropical paradise in a glass.

Ingredients
60ml white rum
60ml coconut cream
120ml crushed pineapple/pineapple juice
Garnish: pineapple wedge

Method
Blend all ingredients with ice until smooth. Pour into a chilled glass, garnish with a pineapple wedge, and serve. Just be aware that if your blender isn’t the best, you may need to use crushed ice.

Bushwacker

Bushwacker the best rum cocktails for summer the three drinkers

In a similar vein to the Colada is the Bushwacker. With its sweetness, the Piña Colada feels indulgent sure, but if you want even more of a dessert-style indulgent sipper, we’re gonna need chocolate. Crème de cacao, coconut cream and milk bring that boozy milkshake feel, and swapping out white for dark rum layers it up with those richer, caramelly notes. What a treat.

 Ingredients
30ml dark rum
30ml creme de cacao
60ml milk
60ml coconut cream
Garnish: chocolate shavings

Method
As long as you have a blender, this couldn’t be simpler. Blend everything with a small amount of ice and bring these out instead of (or alongside) dessert to delight guests.

Strawberry Daiquiri

Strawberry Daiquiri the best rum cocktails for summer the three drinkers

The original is a classic, but with strawberries being such a symbol of the British Summer, we’re going for this much-loved berry riff. The key here is to avoid the cursed super sweet slush puppies some bars serve. If you use delicious, ripe strawberries then they bring natural sugars, so we can go easy on the syrup.

Ingredients
60ml light rum
50g strawberries
20ml lime juice
10ml syrup
Strawberry or lime (optional garnish)

Method
Add everything to a blender with ice but make sure to double strain over your glass when serving. Witness that enchanting red hue and dive in.

Dark ’n Stormy

Dark ’n Stormy the best rum cocktails for summer the three drinkers

This spicy and refreshing mix of dark rum and ginger beer is perfect for a summer evening as the sun sets. A splash of lime juice adds the perfect zing, and the background ginger tingles your tastebuds. The Dark ’n Stormy is known for its distinctive layering, where the dark rum floats atop the ginger beer, creating a dramatic appearance that’s as striking as its flavour. It’s a simple yet sophisticated cocktail that’s both bold and refreshing... and it cure seasickness... possibly.

 Ingredients
50ml dark rum (Goslings Black Seal for traditionalists)
80ml ginger beer
20ml lime juice (optional)
Lime wedge (garnish)

Method
Probably the easiest cocktail to make – add your ginger beer over ice and top up with dark rum!

Zombie

Zombie the best rum cocktails for summer the three drinkers

Legend goes that one hungover man at a bar in 1934 ordered this and became zombified for the rest of the day – take a look at the ingredients and you’ll see why. It might be a tiki classic but it isn’t for the faint-hearted or for light summer sipping – though it certainly has its place. A trio of rums each bring a layer of complexity which is given an intense punch of complex spice from the falernum liqueur. Tropical juices and brandy complete a punch style cocktail with powerful flavours everywhere you look.

Ingredients
30ml dark rum
30ml light rum
20ml overproof rum
10ml falernum liqueur
30ml lime juice
20ml pink grapefruit juice
15ml apricot brandy
30ml pineapple juice
10ml grenadine
Pinch of salt (optional)
Garnish: orange slice/maraschino cherry/sprig of mint/pineapple wedge

Method
Shake all ingredients except the overproof rum with ice, strain over fresh ice, and float the overproof rum on top. Garnish as desired. Enjoy… with caution.

Mai Tai

Mai Tai the best rum cocktails for summer the three drinkers

Sticking with the tiki theme as it’s perfect for summer, this treasure traditionally involves tonnes of homemade creations but nowadays, you can make things easier for yourself. The warmth of the rum is perfectly complemented by the almond sweetness of orgeat syrup and the bright citrus notes of lime and orange liqueur, making it a sophisticated yet fun drink.

 Ingredients
60ml blended rum (like Appleton)
20ml lime juice
20ml orgeat syrup
15ml orange liqueur
Garnish: mint sprig

Method
Shake all ingredients with crushed ice until the shaker frosts. Strain over fresh crushed ice, garnish with a mint sprig, and serve. All tiki decorations welcome.

These are some summer specific rum serves, but if you’re after more and you don’t care what season they’re suited to, take a look at 7 Delicious Rum Cocktails.

Exploring The Cocktails and Drinks of James Bond

exploring the cocktails and drinks of james bond the three drinkers

Despite a pretty hectic lifestyle, James Bond finds the time to enjoy a drink every 11 minutes throughout the films so it’s no secret how fond he is of a tipple. In Casino Royale alone, he consumes 12 different drinks, but it was in the books that 007 focuses even more so on the details of these drinks, saying, “I take a ridiculous pleasure in what I eat and drink. It comes partly from being a bachelor but mostly from a habit of taking a lot of trouble over detail.”

So, if you’re planning a Bond themed party, love the films or you’re just curious, we’ve broken down all of the cocktails and drinks featured throughout the glamourous world of Bond! Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ll definitely know some, but others might surprise you so let’s begin with the most iconic cocktail in cinema history…

Vodka Martini

exploring the cocktails and drinks of james bond the three drinkers vodka martini

Where else could we start? The first ‘shaken not stirred’ martini is ordered on board Goldfinger’s private jet in 1964’s Goldfinger, where the splash of vermouth and twist of lemon is joined by Smirnoff Red Label, the world’s bestselling vodka. This partnership has persevered right up until the most recent film, No Time To Die (2021). Clear colour, no strong odour – the vodka martini is perfect for a quick, stiff drink whilst keeping a low profile.

Whilst we’re here, if you’ve ever wondered why Bond requests his cocktail shaken, it’s because it aerates the drink, reducing the temperature and diluting the mix slightly. Most mixologists will stir it though.

When it comes to the books however, the vodka martini doesn’t show up until the third novel, Moonraker (1955). So, what was Bond’s preference before this? Well…

Gin Martini

Yep, an initial staple of Ian Flemings novels was a gin martini, served with Gordons gin, Vermouth, and a slice of lemon peel – so not a million miles away. But it was very much Sean Connery in Dr. No ordering the vodka martini, ‘shaken not stirred’ with that signature pronunciation that made this Bond’s drink.

The Vesper

This one stands out a little, because Ian Flemming actually invented it – a man of many talents it seems. In Bond’s own words, it’s, ‘three measures of Gordon’s [gin], one [part] of vodka, half a measure of Kina Lillet. Shaken very well until it’s ice-cold.” These days, you would replace Kina Lillet with Lillet Blanc. It’s slightly sweeter and more bitter than a gin martini, with those botanicals tapered by the clean vodka.

Champagne

champagne exploring the cocktails and drinks of james bond the three drinkers

Vodka Martini may stand out as 007’s go to, but it actually seems to be Champagne that he goes for more often, especially in a more relaxed setting. With caviar on the train, late at night with bacon and eggs, at the baccarat table, or washing down a tense dinner, Champagne is probably Bond’s favourite option, with Bollinger featuring in every film since Moonraker (1979).

The first to appear is the Taittinger Blanc de Blanc Brut of 1943, which Bond orders as room service in Casino Royale, before later switching to Veuve Clicquot Ponsardin Brut. Dom Pérignon 1946 accompanies Bond and M for their dinner in Moonraker, Veuve Clicquot Rosé in Diamonds Are Forever (1971) and Thunderball (1965) then Bond seems to find his favourite (that or it’s just a very lucrative product placement deal) with Bollinger. So Bond, perhaps unsurprisingly, has expensive taste. It doesn’t seem like author Ian Fleming had to stretch his imagination too far for this either, as he was a huge fan of bubbly himself, and a letter of his is framed in Maison Taittinger in Reims!

Whisk(e)y

whisky exploring the cocktails and drinks of james bond the three drinkers

007 absolutely loves a whisky. Scotch, American, his choice varies depending on where in the world his missions take him. More often than not, he mixes them with soda which, for premium whiskies, over dilutes them but there we go!

Isle of Skye favourite Talisker pops up in two Pierce Brosnan era films, a massive boost to the distillery that led to many more discovering the smoky, maritime flavour. In fact, this particular drink plays a bigger role than most, because whilst staring at the glass Bond realises a bomb is about to be detonated.

Jack Daniel’s pops up in GoldenEye (1995) too, at the request of M (Judi Dench) who states that she prefers bourbon to cognac. Jack Daniel’s is more of a Tennessee whiskey than an official Bourbon, but we’re not one to argue with M!

For a proper Bourbon, it’s no surprise that CIA counterpart Felix Leiter is the one providing it. He offers Timothy Dalton’s Bond a glass of Jim Beam in The Living Daylights (1987).

The Daniel Craig era has leaned towards Macallan, with Javier Bardem’s Silva offering him the Macallan 1962 Fine and Rare vintage in Skyfall (2012), a nod to the 50th anniversary of the Bond films. Bond even has the Macallan 18 Year Old in his personal collection which he cracks open during Spectre (2015).

Rum

This one would make a great pub quiz question – What is the first drink Daniel Craig orders as James Bond?

The correct answer is, ‘large Mount Gay and soda’ and not a martini! A sweet and expertly crafted Barbadian rum, we love Mount Gay too and think a splash of soda is a good choice.

Mint Julep

mint julep exploring the cocktails and drinks of james bond the three drinkers

Sat on a Kentucky Racecourse with Goldfinger (1964), Bond enjoys a Mint Julep – bourbon, sugar, mint and a load of ice. This sweet, cooling, boozy mix is an authentic serve in the Southern States so it’s no surprise to see it popping up.

Old Fashioned

More of a favourite in the books than the films, Bond repeatedly returns to this cocktail using ‘Old Grandad Bourbon’ with double measures. With how much he loves whisky, it only makes sense.

Americano

Another pub quiz cracker this. Did you know that the Americano is the first drink James Bond ever orders? In the Casino Royale book (1953), Bond points out how nice it is when dining at an outdoor café. Campari, sweet Vermouth and soda water, which, according to Bond, has to be Perrier. He returns to this cocktail in From Russia With Love (1963) as well as A View To A Kill (1985).

This is by no means an absolutely exhaustive list because, as we established, this is an agent with a serious alcohol intake, so drinks and cocktails pop up everywhere. Nonetheless, like everyone, Bond has his favourites – Martinis, Whiskies, and Champagne.

One Drink, Three Ways: Mount Gay Black Barrel

One Drink, Three Ways is the signature feature by The Three Drinkers. Join The Three Drinkers’ Helena, Aidy and Colin as they take one bottle and create a trio of phenomenal serves that you can enjoy anytime, anywhere. From rums and whiskies to gins and wine styles, the three help you get the most out of your glass. It’s time to get liquid on lips.

Mount Gay Black Barrel

Mount Gay is the world’s oldest commercial rum distillery, with the oldest surviving deed dating from 1703! Ironically, it was a man called John Sober who originally started the small distillery at the top of Mount Gilboa, Barbados. After a while, Sir John Gay Alleyne, a fourth generation Barbadian was introduced, and the distillery grew from there, hence the company being named after him.

Their Black Barrel blend is distilled in traditional copper pot and column stills, matured for up to 7 years in American whiskey casks, and further aged for 6 months in heavily charred Bourbon casks. Unsurprisingly, that toasted oak comes through, as does gingerbread and the rich vanilla and pineapple you might expect from a golden Bajan rum.

Helena’s Choice: Cinnamon Twist

My Cinnamon Twist is a kind of milky, spiced rum punch, variations of which have been around since the 1600s. The cinnamon syrup sits perfectly beside the deep vanilla and gingery notes and the milky rum behind it is so deliciously creamy, but still allows the toasty elements of the rum to shine. Shake with ice, then strain over a singular hefty ice cube in a chilled rock glass!

Mount Gay Rum Cinnamon Twist Cocktail

Cinnamon Twist

Recipe

60ml/2oz Mount Gay Black Barrel

44ml/1.5oz Whole Milk

22ml/0.75oz Cinnamon Syrup*

Aidy’s Choice: Good Old Pine

I’ve gone for pure Caribbean sunshine with Good Old Pine. The pineapple in the Black Barrel is mirrored by the tropical pineapple syrup, and the Angostura bitters keep that sweetness in check while also pairing well with the gentler spices in the rum. This is island refreshment at its best. To make it, add all the ingredients to a glass and stir over a big ice cube. Garnish with lemon peel and/or a pineapple frond if you’re feeling fancy.

Mount Gay Rum Good Old Pine

Good Old Pine

Recipe

60ml/2oz Mount Gay Black Barrel

7.5ml/0.25 Pineapple Syrup*

2 Dashes of Angostura Bitters

Colin’s Choice: Bajan Cafe

The detectable vanilla and gingerbread in the Black Barrel pairs nicely with the coffee and almond flavours for a gently warming experience in this Bajan Café. Combined with the toasted notes, it gives a bakery profile to the cocktail that I absolutely love. Add everything, add ice and shake. Strain over ice and garnish with mint. Voilà – the Bajan Café.

Mount Gay Bajan Cafe Cocktail recipe

Bajan Cafe

Recipe

60ml/2oz Mount Gay Black Barrel

30ml/1oz Orgeat

30ml/1oz Coffee

* To make your own pineapple syrup, you can just blend simple syrup with pineapple chunks. Keep the skin on for an earthier flavour, and just make sure to strain well before using. Try grilling it for another level of flavour!

For cinnamon syrup, take one part water (try 1 cup) to one part cane sugar and heat gently until the sugar has dissolved. Add 4 cinnamon sticks and allow to infuse for at least 1.5 hours - or overnight if you want more of a kick!
