8 Cocktails That Scream ‘I Love You’ for Valentine’s Day

You might love it, you might hate it, but Valentine’s Day is just around the corner, so whether you’re on course for a Valentine’s, a Galentine’s or posting a card to yourself, you’ll want something to make it special. These 8 cocktails scream ‘I love you’ because let’s remember, Valentine’s Day isn’t a day for couples, it’s a day for love!

Pink Gimlet

This is a wonderfully harmonious cocktail, bringing fresh grapefruit tang and lime zing, but also delicious fruity sweetness using pink gin. It’s full of flavour, beautifully fresh and looks stunning too.

Ingredients
50ml pink gin
15ml syrup
50ml lime juice
75ml pink grapefruit juice
Rose petals (garnish)

Method
Fill a shaker with ice, add all the above and get shaking. Once nicely chilled, strain into a glass (you might want to double strain if you used fresh fruit for a super smooth cocktail). A few rose petals to finish and it’s perfect.

Bramble

bramble 8 cocktails that scream i love you for valentine's day the three drinkers

Brambles bring such a delicious combo of rich berries, bright lemon, and tart blackberries, and all with crisp juniper at the heart of it. It’s also got a really cosy feel and looks seductive too.

Ingredients
50ml gin
25ml lemon juice
1 tbsp blackberry liqueur (Crème de Mûre or Crème de Cassis)
1 tbsp sugar syrup
Fresh blackberries (garnish)

Method
Shake everything with ice, and strain over more ice in a rocks glass. If you want some fresh blackberry taste, you can garnish with them, or even muddle them in the bottom of the glass before pouring. Enjoy!

Spicy Margarita

spicy margarita 8 cocktails that scream i love you for valentine's day the three drinkers

Bringing some spice to your Valentine’s – the Spicy Margarita. And be aware, you might never go back to the regular version. It doesn’t lose the classic essentials and retains the balance of sweet, sour, and earthy notes. There are all kinds of different variations, using different chillis in different amounts, but this is a good amount of heat to start with.

Ingredients
50ml reposado tequila
25ml fresh lime juice
15ml agave syrup
1 slice of chilli (muddled)
2/3 slices of jalapeno (garnish)

Method
Muddle the chillis (however many you enjoy really), in the shaker, and include tequila. Lime and agave syrup. Shake well with ice and strain. Scatter some jalapenos on top, kick back and feel the heat.

Elderflower Cosmopolitan

elderflower cosmo 8 cocktails that scream i love you for valentine's day the three drinkers

A standard Cosmo is near perfect for Valentine’s, but we think this floral twist is even better. It’s a delicious, wintery concoction with the cranberry tang out, and the elderflower liqueur in, for a mellow, fragrant florality that dresses the vodka steel nicely. This in one hand, a bunch of flowers in the other – you’re sorted.

Ingredients
45ml vodka
20ml elderflower liqueur
20ml pineapple juice
Dash of lemon
Dash of rose water (optional)
Basil (garnish)

Method
This is all about putting the work in with the shaking. Once it feels icy cold, strain over ice and serve to your Valentine!

Mudslide

mudslide 8 cocktails that scream i love you for valentine's day the three drinkers

A dessert style cocktail is always welcome on Valentine’s Day. We were going to go for chocolate, but how about a Mudslide instead? It’s a 70s adaptation of the White Russian that is now super popular in America, often mixed with ice cream. We think that the ingredients here are too delicious to be drowned in ice cream, but it’s up to you of course. Rich indulgence at its finest.

Ingredients
50ml vodka
50ml coffee liqueur (Kahlúa)
50ml Irish cream liqueur
Grated chocolate (garnish)

Method
Shake all three very well because the vodka needs to be well mixed within the thicker liqueurs. Include ice and stop when it feels cold to the touch, before straining into a Martini glass and going the extra mile with some grated chocolate on top. Mouthwatering

Kir Royale

kir royale 8 cocktails that scream i love you for valentine's day the three drinkers

Champagne is a go to when celebrating, and this French serve embraces all the magic of the city of love. It’s so simple but feels elegant and special. Dreamy blackcurrant liqueur Crème de Cassis brings the berries, and if you don’t want to splash out on a Champagne, a Crémant or Cava will do just fine. If you’re making a meringue dessert, then this is incredible alongside too.

Ingredients
1 tbsp crème de cassis
Champagne
Blackberry or raspberry (optional garnish)

Method
Liqueur first with this cocktail, before topping up your Champagne flute to the top with your fizz. A blackberry or raspberry garnish is a must, and that’s it – a simple but delicious serve.

Love and Murder

love and murder 8 cocktails that scream i love you for valentine's day the three drinkers

For a taste of Valentine’s gone wrong, how about this intriguing cocktail? It’s not for everyone, but you might just absolutely adore it. Bitter Campari and herbaceous green Chartreuse combine with the vibrant zip of fresh lime for a cocktail that forces you to pay attention. The harmony of balance is surprising, but with the subtle salt enhancing the sweetness and balancing out the bitterness slightly, it works a treat.

Ingredients
30ml Campari
30ml green Chartreuse
30ml lime juice
10ml syrup
4 drops of saline solution (kosher salt 1:5 water)

Method
The saline solution is a simple case of dissolving a little salt in water, and remember you only need tiny amounts here to make an almost imperceptible difference. Shake everything with ice and strain into a chilled coupe.

Strawberry Daiquiri

strawberry daiquiri 8 cocktails that scream i love you for valentine's day the three drinkers

We couldn’t leave this one out. Fully embracing our favourite heart shaped fruits, strawberries are synonymous with love and romance. It’s a misconception that the Daiquiri has to be a sickly-sweet slush puppy. Instead, it can be classy with warming rum, fresh lime, cooling mint and succulent, sweet berries.

Ingredients (jug)
60ml rum (light ideally )
50g fresh strawberries
20ml lime juice
15ml syrup
Strawberry or lime (optional garnish)

Method
Blenders out for this one, but don’t start thinking this is a load of work because we’re just chucking everything in, before a double strain for silky smoothness. If you can use crushed ice to show some love to your blender too that will help. Go for a lime wedge or strawberry with a slice up the middle for garnish. Delicious.

Whatever your tipple of choice, there’s a cocktail that you’ll fall in love with waiting below!

Raspberry Daiquiri – for the rum lovers

The Best Cocktails to Make for Valentine’s Day The Three Drinkers Raspberry Daiquiri – for the rum lovers

Daiquiri is often dismissed as a slush-puppy style cocktail that’s overly sweet, but not this. It’s stunningly simple and when made correctly, it absolutely hits the spot. The raspberry and lime add a nice fruity tang to the syrup that works harmoniously with the rum for a seriously moreish cocktail.

Ingredients
50ml rum (white ideally, e.g., Havana Club 3YO)
30ml raspberry-lime syrup (try Monin)
10ml lime juice
Raspberry stick (garnish)

Method
Heat sugar and water in equal parts and throw in some raspberries and a squeeze of lime – to your preference. Once cooled, shake this and the remaining ingredients until cold and strain twice! Delicious.

Chocolate Martini – for the vodka lovers

The Best Cocktails to Make for Valentine’s Day The Three Drinkers Chocolate Martini – for the vodka lovers

If you’ve forgotten the chocolate box on Valentine’s, then don’t worry because this is even better. Deliciously sweet and silky smooth, the Chocolate Martini verges on dessert territory so it’s as indulgent as cocktails get – perfect for Valentine’s!

Ingredients

50ml vodka
25ml Irish Cream liqueur
30ml chocolate liqueur (like Godiva)
1 tbsp of melted chocolate
A sprinkling of cocoa powder

Method
You can drizzle the melted chocolate in a spiral or use a pastry brush to paint chocolate streaks along the glass. Save a little for the rim (or use the liqueur) and roll the glass in cocoa powder before chilling. Shake everything else with a generous handful of ice until it feels extremely chilled, then strain it into the glasses! Top Tip: If you half a strawberry lengthways then it’s the perfect natural heart garnish!

Tequila Mockingbird – for the tequila lovers

The Best Cocktails to Make for Valentine’s Day The Three Drinkers Tequila Mockingbird – for the tequila lovers

Much more than a pun, this is a gorgeous cocktail that varies across the world. Watermelon is underused in mixology because it lacks flavour when used sparingly, or it dilutes the drink too much. However, when combined as ice cubes it’s sublime and too good for just summertime. The jalapeño adds some spice to your Valentine’s Day too in this juicy, sweet and pleasantly earthy mix.

Ingredients
50ml blanco tequila
15ml lime juice
15ml agave syrup
3 watermelon cubes
1 slice jalapeño

Method
You can plop the watermelon ice cubes in (literally frozen cubes of watermelon), or to get more flavour muddle them and jalapeño in the bottom of the cocktail shaker. Add the other ingredients and fill with ice. Shake vigorously until well chilled and strain twice over into a glass. Use a good tequila!!

Blinker – for the whiskey lovers

The Best Cocktails to Make for Valentine’s Day The Three Drinkers Blinker – for the whiskey lovers

Unfairly overlooked for a Valentine’s cocktail, we can’t leave whisky out and this Blinker is so simple and elegant that it’s easy to love. In the same vein as a classic Whiskey Sour, grenadine was originally used as a sweetener, but we prefer raspberry syrup!

Ingredients
50ml rye whiskey
50ml grapefruit juice (any colour)
15ml raspberry syrup/grenadine
Raspberries (garnish)

Method
Heat and stir demerara sugar and water in a 1:1 ratio and add a handful of raspberries to form a pulp before straining and allowing to cool. That’s the hard bit done, now you just shake with ice, strain and serve! Skewered raspberries make for a special final touch.

Pink Gimlet – for the gin lovers

The Best Cocktails to Make for Valentine’s Day The Three Drinkers Pink Gimlet – for the gin lovers

This is a gorgeous tangy Gimlet with added fruity sweetness from the use of pink gin. The grapefruit and lime accentuate citrus notes in the gin and depending on the gin you use, a dash of syrup will balance things out perfectly. Especially if you use fresh juice, this will be packed with intense flavour and beguiling freshness.

Ingredients
50ml pink gin (Mirabeau Rosé Gin is perfect)
25ml syrup
50ml lime juice
75ml pink grapefruit juice
Rose petals (garnish)

Method
Simply pour all the ingredients into an ice filled cocktail shaker and shake together, then strain into a glass. Garnish with half a wheel of lime or even better, some rose petals, and you’re all set.

La Violetta – perfect for the sparkling wine lovers

The Best Cocktails to Make for Valentine’s Day The Three Drinkers La Violetta – perfect for the sparkling wine lovers

Sparkling wine screams celebration, and the La Violetta is a wonderfully versatile fizz cocktail for Valentine’s Day. You can use whatever bubbles you have, Lambrusco, Champagne, Cava, Prosecco – it all works! For your taste, just leave out or add in a dash of syrup depending on the wine you’ve gone for. The lush floral aroma of the créme de violette works so well with most gin botanicals, and with the citrus and beautiful bubbles it's so refreshing too.

Ingredients
30ml dry gin
15ml lemon juice
15ml créme de violette
30ml sparkling wine
Tbsp of syrup (optional)

Method
Wine aside, shake everything and double strain into your glass. Top up with fizz and stir gently! Voilá!

Massive whisky afficiando at the tequila party? There’s often one… However much they might insist that nothing will beat their whisky, you must insist harder that this Añejo Old Fashioned is very much worth their time. The aged Añejo tequila provides oaky notes, spice and flavours of roasted agave which is bound to put a smile on even their face.

60ml añejo tequila
7.5ml agave syrup

Tequila Mockingbird

Tequila Mockingbird Cocktail

Like the pun?! If not, off to the library with you it is! If you’re going for the classy, progressive Atticus Finch look - you’re going to need one of these in your hand. We’re not sure how the watermelon fits in with the novel, but it sure fits into the cocktail well!

Ingredients
50ml blanco tequila
15ml lime juice
15ml agave syrup
3 watermelon cubes
1 slice jalapeño

Method
Muddle the watermelon cubes and jalapeño in the bottom of the cocktail shaker. Add the other ingredients and fill with ice. Shake vigorously until well chilled and fine strain into a glass over ice.

Frozen Margarita

Frozen Margarita Cocktail

It may not quite be summer, but we’re certainly not far off now. That calls for the summer drink of all summer drinks - the Frozen Margarita! This is basically a margarita slushie and the recipe is the same as a normal margarita - just with added ice and a blender. Blend it baby!

Ingredients
50ml blanco tequila
25ml Cointreau
25ml lime juice
15ml sugar syrup
large handful of ice
wedge of lime to garnish

Method
Place all the ingredients in a blender, excluding the lime wedge, and blend until smooth. Pour into a margarita glass and garnish with a wedge of lime. Enjoy!

Tequila Sunrise

Tequila Sunrise Cocktail

It may be called a sunRISE, but we recommend you drink these at sunset instead… The name actually comes from what the drink looks like when it’s in the glass. For this reason, don’t stir in the grenadine when you pour it in or it will ruin the beautiful ombre effect that the different colours give! Don’t look at it for too long, however, because it’s really all about the flavours! Refreshing and fruity, this long tequila drink is one to note down.

Ingredients
100ml orange juice
50ml blanco tequila
30ml grenadine
maraschino cherry and orange wheel for garnish

Method
Fill a large glass with ice and pour in orange juice and tequila. Pour over the grenadine and do not stir. Garnish with the cherry and orange wheel. Enjoy!

Paloma

Paloma Cocktail

According to legend, the Paloma is named after a popular Mexican folk song written in the 1860s! Now isn’t that a fun fact! The grapefruit juice and grapefruit soda in this cocktail gives it a wonderful tang that tastes great with the blanco tequila. It’s super easy to make, and has a really pretty pink tinge to it that looks perfect with a grapefruit wheel garnish!

Ingredients
50ml blanco tequila
25ml grapefruit juice
12.5ml lime juice
7.5ml agave syrup
50ml pink grapefruit soda
wheel of grapefruit for garnish

Method
Shake the tequila, grapefruit juice, lime juice and agave syrup with ice until well chilled. Strain into a tall glass and top up with grapefruit soda. Garnish with a wheel of grapefruit.

Bloody Maria

Had enough of Bloody Marys? Ready to move onto something a little different? Try a Bloody Maria! While the name might not be totally inventive (with Maria being Spanish for Mary), the swap of vodka for tequila really elevates this classic cocktail and gives it an extra hit of flavour not achieved by the vodka. Let us know if you have a go!

Ingredients
50ml blanco tequila
100ml tomato juice
12.5ml lemon juice
1tsp horseradish
3 dashes tabasco
3 dashes Worcestershire sauce
1 pinch celery salt
1 pinch black pepper
lime wedge for garnish
lemon wedge for garnish
celery stick for garnish

Method
Add all ingredients except for garnishes to an ice filled shaker and shake vigorously until well chilled. Strain into a glass over ice and garnish with a lemon wedge, lime wedge and celery stick. Extra chilli optional!

good quality ginger beer
